does what im thinking sound right?
« on: 18 December 2008, 22:28:00 »

hiya,
i changed to the 3.0 cams and was on about changing cam cover seals but oof shop was sold out... anyway i rammed some cam covers on with decent looking soft rubber seals/gaskets on...

anyway-
*it wont start/idle without about half throttle held on
*smoke coming off the exhaust manifold from the cam covers and the *timings slightly out on cyl 1 and 2 (it's retarded about 1 degree if that on both) just so that the lines are touching the guage marks on both cams
*possibly the icv's buggered as it makes funny noises

also i found that the hole in the secondary air injector pipe made a difference when held sealed or left open (ran with it sealed by my big hand haha or died with it open)

hope you can help!

What kind of noises is the ICV making...sounds like an air leak tbh matey...but with 3.0 cams you need timing spot on anyway...oil could just be old stuff burning off??

A couple of questions

1) Was it running ok before this work?

2) Did you remvoe the plug leads to do the job?

3) Any snags along the way (other than this one!)

iv never actually had it running apart from when i'd blown oil out of the plug wells, started it up an ran ok but then when i revved it, it started getting oil in the plug wells again so started missing (needing the gaskets changing)

that was with the 2.5 cams in though.

im thinking that it's getting oil in plug wells again so sounding a bit horrible and timings very slightly out.

one other thing i noticed.. previously my secondary air injection didnt work, the other night it was whirring away quite happily and then oily steam was coming off what looked like the exhuast manifold/heat shield (couldnt see the exact bit of oil kinda thing)

just to give yes/no answers...
1.yes (from what i had it running with the 2.5 cams in after cleaning plug wells)
2.not from the dispack no
3.there werent any snags but the cable try is a pain in the arse right above the plug leads and cam cover!

right then... the omegas more or less sorted (turned out to be a vac pipe that i hadnt connected (iv took the multiram and timing belt cover off a couple of times *rolls eyes*

at times it was running very horrible...and then it wouldnt idle because somebody forgot to plug the icv in

anyway the timings spot on but i still dont think it'll idle even with the vac pipes connected and the icv plugged in... and i think that oil vapour was just what was already there which needed burning off  :y

ill check tomorrow when i get the multiram back on... for the 4th time? in a day

lol! i actually swapped the one way valve on the secondary air injection today... old one was fubar'd ....and chopped off that hole in the pipe chris- previously it pissed out air very bad and it didnt start unless it gripped it with my hand!

anyway *rolls eyes*
it might be sorted now ;)

p.s i cant get those heads off atm even if i wanted to because i sheered off my quarter to half inch adaptor (doh) i'v got one bolt out though :P
