Proposed new speeding penalties
« on: 09 November 2007, 12:23:57 »

Just heard it on my wind-up radio. Doing 45 or over in a 30 limit, 6 points and £100 fine.

Quite right!

I'd shoot the b*stards. >:(

Just 'cos your Alfa won't do 45, there's no need to deny the rest of us that pleasure. Miserable git.  ;) ;D ;D

Not sure I agree 100%. There are some really daft speed limits in place. One near me is a 30 and yet there's nothing on either side of the road except grass, the house are set well back and the footpath is about 50 feet from the road. Try doing 30 and you just cause a huge tailback. Friend of mine got done twice in one day by a hidden Talivan.  :(

And don't tell me you've NEVER done over 70 on a motorway.  :-X

Why do they never place these things by schools / hospitals where safety IS a concern.  Reason?  Because there is no money in it.

I agree, ALL schools should have loads of these speed ramps on the road, as many as possible to slow down the total idiots that insist on speeding outside these establishments.
It is a distressing and gut wrenching thing to go through when a loved one is harmed due to a speeding idiot outside a school, it is something that needs addressing NOW not when the goverment decide its time to do.

A lad that used to work for me got done twice, buy the same camera, two days on the trot on the Thelwall Viaduct. Plonka. It's not like the cameras had only just been put up...they had been there for nearly 2 years and he passed them every day.

You try and get something done about it. You'll get nowhere.

When I lived in Birmngham, my kids went to school right opposite Sparkhill Police Station. I complained about the speeding and bad parking, but everytime I got the same response..."we'll send a traffic warden over in a bit". By the time they got there, the school had closed up and everyone had gone. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr TURDS!!!!

The problem here isn't the speed limits but the dogged resolve to "get" people for speeding. This to me seems to be fundamental to the British psyche. Make some rules, catch people breaking them and punish them. If they keep doing it punish them more oh and make some more rules. Nobody asks why people speed? Is it 'cos they are stressed up? Is it because there just isn't enough time to do everything in a day because the roads are so congested and poorly designed? Is it because employers don't offer enough flexi working? Is it because people have to/choose to work so far from home?

It will only stop when we all drive on tractor beams at set (close) intervals or the manufactures start producing cars that physically cannot exceed the speed limits in force! Omega drivers would then just have to tootle along behind .

Regarding the speed limits themselves. My view has been for some years that Motorways should be 80, arterial roads in and out of conurbations 40 or 50 but with better fencing/crossings. All other urban roads 20.

I read one (government I think) report suggesting that the motorway speed limit could be 100, and people would carry on driving at the speeds they do today.
