3.0 Water Leak - Update
« on: 04 January 2009, 13:56:55 »

Right here we go, Ive just stripped the wipers and scuttle off the car and had a good look round for water leaks. The HBV is completly dry and is definatly not leaking however I can quite clearly see that water is running down the bell housing and right hand rear corner of the block next to oil filter. Thinking of possible exterior head gasket I jacked up car and got out the torch and managed to just squeeze my arm up sufficient to tell that the water appears to be coming from above the gasket.

Unfortunatly I am still non the wiser as to where this leak is coming from. It is obviously only leaking when engine running and appears to be worse when the heaters are switched off.

Again it is unfortunate that I have never stripped a 3.0 down so at the moment am unclear on what needs removing and where things are.

Anyone got any ideas, I wondered about core plugs but cannot get my hand down the back to have a feel or see. I even tried getting the camera behind it but as you can guess not enough room.

Might not be any help at all but I thought I had a water leak not long back and it turned out to be water that was building up in the black plastic coated foamy stuff under the scuttle. It had filled itself to blowing point then started leaking which is what I think duffed my dispack  :-/

You've got the coolant bridge which is between the V at the rear of the engine, then below that is the coolant transfer pipe which is just above the bell housing in the centre and an assortment of hoses at the rear of the engine plus the thermostat housing and oil cooler cover plate which could leak and depending on how level the car is could/would run down the bell housing :(

You will have to remove the plenum and inlet manifold to get a good look at the thermostat and oilcooler cover, about 1/2 an hour ;)

Here's a pic of the oilcooler cover and coolant bridge.

Yep, the hose goes from the coolant bridge to the HBV and from the HBV to the Heater Matrix. The coolant transfer pipe is alloy I think and is located below the coolant bridge and goes to the front of the engine via the drivers side but has a thin rubber O ring to seal it to the engine block.

Also while I was looking for the water leak I found a hose that was not connected to anything. For some reason it is tie wrapped up at the top. There was no fluid coming from it and it didnt appear to be causing any problem. Any ideas what/where its from??

Looks suspiciously like the autobox breather pipe to me.. should be tied up out of the way with the open end quite high .. :)

If I'm wrong an expert will pass by and correct me soon .. I hope .. :)

Excellent, thats one less thing to worry about.

Next to see if there are any threads on stripping the 3.0 down to gain access to the oil cooler pipes/collant bridge & thermostat.

If its dry thats next weekends work sorted, at this rate she will get her wallpapering done in august  ::) ;D
