Can i have your opinions please
« on: 02 January 2009, 10:20:43 »

About me mig 3.0 mv6 , just phoned the Dealership who have done all the service work, the car as now done 65000 miles, back in 2003 at 39000 miles the Timing belt was done, i know this was 5 years ago but do you thing ile be safe to odrive the car for a couple of months before the belts done or should i do this ASAP?

How likely is this to snap or should i get it done.

Reason im asking is there could be a possible job coming up for me which requires me paying out 500 quid out of my old one to transfer licenses and im thinking that i only cover 2-3 miles a day whilst im at work so could this wait?

Bit of a ramble but im unsure what to do?  :)

Vauxhalls own advice is the cambelt MUST be done every 4 years or 40k without fail

The recommended change interval is 40k miles or 4 years, whichever comes first.  As its over 5 years since last changed, the general concensus on here is that you are on borrowed time....

Was it just the belt that was changed last time or were the tensioners done as well?  Needs done as a kit, not just the belt...    :y

Well it is certainly considered by those in the know on this Forum that the belt should be changed before 40k miles, or four years which ever comes sooner.

Time wise you are obviously over this time, but mileage wise some way below.  It is a risk not to replace it asap as you know you will lose the engine if it goes!! :'( :'(   It can only be your choice as to whether or not you leave it for a few more weeks, and that could be fine, but you know about sods law, and cambelts, or tensioners, have been known to go at any time. ::) ::)

Looks liek belt will have to be done then and if i do get new job ile have to sort it from there!

Cheers

BUT on a quick note i know myself the belt is due, but why do Vauxhall keep insisting 80k on my engine, the service advisor said it twice, you would think they know there own product!

it was once 80k/8yrs, but was halved due to eccessive failures in that time - mostly it would appear from tensioner failure rather than belt (hence why you need to change cambelt kit, not just belt)

That does seem to be the case changed my 4 pot last year after realising i had owned it nearly 6yrs  and had the belt changed just after buying it...so 5yrs+ (only put 30k on it  :y) it was on & after examining it, it really looked in good shape I must say, so the belts do last probably better than you think its the pulley bits that must fail !

He should be able to get you a Vaux pump for sub £30 inc so I would go for that. 200 quid is a good deal if he is a good mech.   I would also consider putting a new aux belt on while you are at it .
