Much cheaper than VX, cost me £550 for belt kit and water pump, and another £150 for the thernostat and temperature senders, and I supplied the thermostat, they wanted £800 in total, but they took £700 in the end :o

That is exactly what a main Vx dealer in Dover quoted me for the same work! :o :o  No way for me; I prefer to get my hands dirty and break my nails than pay that, but I'm lucky, I can! ::) ::) ;)

I'm on my 2nd V6 - I had a written exchange with Vx when the 1st one (1999) approached 40k (like.... it's first major service!). They assured me the V6 was Ok for 80k as per the manual and they spurned my allegation of a design fault. Got it in writing again for the 2nd (2003) though still 80k in the manual.
Anyway - I bottled it with both and had them done at 60k. ::)

It comes down to do i take the risk and hope for the best...until i can replace it.   With me i did around 1000 miles before i got belt kit , dvd and hired locking tools because i had to use car...in hind sight i wouldn't have driven it with the belt loose as it was...yours might be ok and you may have no probs for the next few weeks....you just don't know and thats what does your head in.   its one of the joys of owning a v6 er  !!

First off, change it asap if not before.
Do it yourself, if you can borrow a locking kit and get a gates or contitech belt and tensioner kit for £70 off off the net, then job done, if money is tight maybe leave the water pump. But what ever, do it now. Or you may well end up with a far bigger bill and a load more agro. Personally, due to experience, i would not rush to give a vauxhall mech my cash, mate or no mate, sorry just wouldnt. Hth

Ps if you buy off the net make sure you get the right part numbers.

Are we not getting a little paranoid here?

The tensioners do not go kaput just because they reach 40,001 miles.
Vx went supersafe on ALL their cars with a blanket 40k recommendation and the dealers love them for it. I was told a good mechanic can hear the rattling from them and/or the water pump. So, take it easy, drive smoothly and listen to the engine with the bonnet up (preferably whilst not driving - keep safe out there).
