Certainly interested mate, I'm only free evenings though which is useless for you,

I can do weekends in the day, however the next two weekends I am not around!!

But can I mail you coming up to the 23rd 24th if you don't mind?

cheers,

Matt.

Evenings are a bit pointless in this light but any weekend your free will be fine (I don't work weekends anyway) :y

By quick peek I meant cam belt cover off to confirm the belts status, I wasn't planning on dropping my glass eye in the filler cap :P

Smell could well be leaking camcover seals..

To be honest the smell was more like an electrical burning smell almost like burning plastic.

here's what happened,

Driving to redditch from the NEC, normal speeds ( I have a bike for speed and general thrills) left the M42 at junction 3a (redditch) and this awful smell appeared, I turned the heating off (which was on full blast at full heat) the smell went away as I got to the bottom of the A435 to take the redditch bromsgrove exit I turned the heating back on and the smell came straight back and thats when the engine cut out and I lost power steering.

waited over an hour for the RAC chap to arrive, he looked at it and decided it was the cambelt snapping which is what would explain the smell,

He asked me to turn the engine while he removed a cover from the left side of the engine he said he could see that the valves were shot.

I'm by no means a mechanic so I take his word as gospel,

Does this make sense to anyone? smell appearing only when the heating was activated?

Cheers,

Matt.

The smell could have come from the cambelt tensioner, the bearing gets hot and melts causing the cambelt to jump teeth.

Sounds the most logical. Depends how many teeth as to how much damage it's done really.

That would be the favourite!

Best thing to do is trun the engine to TDC and remove the top two bolts from the cam cover.....then you can see the timing marks.

Quicker and easier than a strip down!

I'm over by the NEC in birmingham and could possibly help as well.

I've got a cam locking kit around and, after I replaced my cambelt I kept the old belt and tensioners:  now this is no permenant solution BUT if your tensioners have failed you could relace them with my used ones to see if your engine still runs - if so then a new kit is in order.

let me know (by PM) if that would help

Mine is a V reg so probably the same year as yours.

I'll ask one of the nice chaps off here to come and tell me what I need, I'm crap at this sort of thing so you'll have to excuse my ignorace/lack of knowledge!

not to mention I'm getting my Van repaired at the moment, its all sh1ts and giggles eh?!

Cheers for the info, will contact you as soon as I know what the best plan of action is,

Cheers,

Matt.
