Do I Need Any Replacement Parts???
« on: 10 January 2009, 21:39:16 »

Ok just a quick one I hope.

I need to strip my 3.0 MV6 down to try and find this bloody water leak. (Before you ask its not the HBV!)

Now since I have never worked on a 3.0 before I have no idea if I need any replacment seals/gaskets to put it back together. I thought if I stripped it down I should be able to find the leak and then put it back together until I get the necesary parts.

I would have thought it would be easier to find a water leak with the engine intact and running than with it stripped down...if not the HBV though then quite possible its the water pump leaking or the oil cooler seal leaking...you can certainly strip off the plenium upper and lower manifold/seperators to get to the oil cooler in the middle of the V with no seals broken, and you can remove the multiram and cambelt cover with no seal broken to look at those 2 possibilities...

May as well change the water pump if its not been done recently while there and likewise the oil cooler if you have the mechanical skill level and a crows foot spanner to undo oil cooler pipe (unless you want to risk gently persuading the pipes out the way to get the old cooler out)

Would also suggest cleaning the breather holes that the breather pipes on the back of the plenum run to while you have the plenium off...costs nowt and needs doing regularly to help stop camcover gaskets leaking :)

I know the water leak is definatly not from the water pump. The water is running down the back of the engine on passenger side so think its coming from around the v area or one of the hoses. Just didnt know if stripping would damage any seals as dont fancy having to walk to work on monday at 6am  ;D

Also check the pipe that runs to the near side of the HBV as mine was leaking just the same as you discribe.
The hose clip had dug in and it only leaked intermitantly

Ummm like to see that. Nearly bought an ex plod myself as a fried works at snig hill in finance and knows when they send theres for auction lol

My hbv is bone dry and the leak is pretty consistant, I checked the hv last weekend and had engine running so I could make sure it wasnt otherwise I would have changed it then.

hiya andy, im on about the heater bridge rather than heater bypass valve..you know which i mean?
it's at the back of the oil cooler with two of those bolts which are hollow (one on each head) just behind the last inlet port on each head (you cant miss it as it looks like a bar going across at the back between the two banks)

here's a pic btw

lol..if you take the plenum off and the intake manifold which is directly under it, you have a black plastic manifold gasket under that with rubber o ring like things on it, if you take that off your down to the oil cooler, heater bridge and thermostat pipes
the heater bridge if you look from the front of the bonnet is just slightly above the oil cooler but at the very back of it (literally not even an inch away from it) an it just like a bar across between the backs of the two cylinder heads

want me to draw a simple drawing on paint?
