Cold Heater problems Omega Elite 2.5 2001
« on: 10 January 2009, 00:45:08 »

Hi all,

First of all I was a main dealer, time served C & G apprentice then vehicle technician / MOT Tester for 20 odd years (from 1985) , my service mainly served with Austin Rover, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Ford. I then moved into non franchised management and eventually into my own business that is not motor vehicle related.

I have now become the proud owner of my fathers 2.5 Omega Elite 2001 vintage, he is a mini cab driver and this was his last mini cab!, 256,000 genuine (short journey) miles on the clock.

The Omega and I missed eachother during my time as a technician at Jessups. London rd Romford and I have a few questions regarding Heater faults.

Cold heater: it has climate control.
The vac hose to the HBV does switch between depresion and AP when turned from "hi" to "low", the pipes to the HBV / heater matrix are hot, the temp gauge hardly ever gets off cold. Its ice cold when turned down low but no heat on Hi, searching the threds here it looked like a stuck HBV so I routed the vac hose direct to the manifold (thinking the on/off switching of the vacum when driving might free the valve off, it worked ;-) I noticed that after about 300 miles, on acceleration (no depression to the HBV) I got a burst of heat. After puttng the pipes back correctly I get some heat but not to the point where I ever have to turn it off or down, for good heat to be sustained it has to be set to Hi and I have to set a low fan speed. Also entire interior mists up quite badly to the point where I have to have the drivers door window open about 2 inches to ensure no misting no matter what I do with the Climate Control.

Any help welcome

Thanks in advance

If your HBV is operating correctly and all vac pipes are correctly fitted your heater matrix pipes are hot the only other reason it could be (may be corrected later) the thermostat stuck in the open position. There is a how too in the maintanence section on how to renew. As said I might be corrected or it could be something else but I'm sure someone else along.

might be worth double checking entire vac loyout.

Also, do the direction controls work as expected.

Might also be worth doing a live data check via tech2, see what the climate ecu thinks is happening. facelift climate fairly reliable, except solar sensors.

If the gauge never comes off cold I would suspect the thermostat, It should run just below mid-gauge.

If you leave it idling until the fan kicks in does the gauge reach just above the mid-point? Does the heater then work OK?

Might also be worth flushing the cooling system and putting some fresh antifreeze in. Could be that corrosion is starting to take its' toll which might explain the HBV sticking. Maybe the heater matrix is also starting to block?
