How do i remove the oil filter case on 03 v6
« on: 14 January 2009, 15:26:17 »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone tell me which way to turn the oil filter case on a 03 V6?

The filter in the new BMW type with a 15/16 nut on the case end and uses a paper cartridge filter not the usual all in one unit.
The case is stamped 15nm and a clockwise arrow.
I have tried every extension in the socket set but can only get the case to move 1/8 turn either way and then it seizes solid...
Thanks in anticipation

These are prone to weakness and eventual shearing!

To undo you turn it anti-clockwise as you look at the side of the engine, and I found a 1/2" end of my socket spanner fitted perfectly in the square recess, as the nut is an awkward 21.5mm!   But, be very careful not to shear the case.

However, if you did not all is lost as there are details on this site on how to convert the filter to an all inclusive cartridge type! ::) ::)

These do NOT have a weakness.....they suffer only as the result of hand fisted mechanics over tightening them!

The same would a happen to a metal style filter they could get a socket on it!

All above - Many thanks for your replies, especially lizzie zoom for the suggestion to use the 1/2" socket and converting to a canister type. Too cold to try again this afternoon will have a go tomorrow.

Thanks, but the socket may be a 3/8" instead!  Age plays tricks on my mind, but possibly the 1/2" connector is ok!  ::) ::) ::):D :D :D :D ;)

Whatever size it was it worked for me! ;D :y

Again thanks - looking at the pictures on the forum it has raised another question. When I tried to turn the nut the whole case moved. is this correct or should just the top/lid part turn and the base remain fixed to the engine block?

It SHOULD only be the lid that comes off. Sounds like the case has come loose in your case.

Also, I would use a large socket on the hexagon shaped moulding on the lid, rather than the 3/8" square hole if you are going to have to apply lots of force. It will be stronger.

If the whole case is trying to turn, get an oil filter strap wrench around it to brace it wjhile you unscrew the lid, then tighten the retaining bolt once the filter's out.

As said, the lid has been overtightened at some stage. These are no bother if you observe the 15nm torque setting.

The whole cylinder comes off on mine, not just the top/lid Kevin :o :o :-?

"The base" on mine is the actual engine block which certainly cannot become dislodged, unless you break the whole engine! :D :D ;)
