running hot when not driving fast
« on: 16 January 2009, 08:04:54 »

I still have a problem with my 96' omega 2.5v6.

Here is an example: it is -5'C outside, and roads are covered with snow, so the traffic is slow (20-30 mph) with some stops on traffic lights. And, after 10 min of driving like this, temp rises up to 98'C, fan cuts in, and lowers the temp on 90ish.

I know that it is normal for a V6 to run hot, but I still find this strange.

It seems to me that cooling system is not efficient as it is supposed to be, and there fore it heats up more than it is supposed to.

I was thinking a lot about this, and this is what I think:

a) radiator full of deposit and sludge
when I bought the car, cooling system was filled with tap water, and when I drained it, it was a bit dirty. I flushed the rad, and there was a yellow-brownish fluid coming from the radiator. Now,everything is clean.
But, could the radiator still be full of deposits? maybe it needs to be flushed few more times, or with a stronger flushing agent?

b) thermostat stuck
can thermostat be stuck in a half opened position? because, i've noticed, beside the problem of heat-up, that it takes quite a lot of time to warm up from cold. Is the thermostat supposed to be closed when engine is cold, and open when it reaches certain temperature?

My view is that its not likely to be a rad issue (it cools fine when the fans are blowing) and its not an issue with the engine getting to hot (again its the ability to cool thats the problem).

Have you checked the fuses in the ECU box in the engine bay, these oeprate the front mounted fans which run at low speed above say 95degc to stabilise the temp better

fan kicks in when temperature is above 97-98'C.

but,IMO,the temperature rises to 97-98'C to fast and to often.

Low speed fans should kick in just above mid point, high speed fans as it approaches 100C

fan on my car kicks in just below 100'C...that's high speed fan, right?

so,probably low speed fan isn't working...will check it this afternoon.
