Can only select reverse
« on: 23 January 2009, 14:44:40 »

Hi All
I have today only got the option to select reverse gear on my autobox. It will go into all other but when trying to drive the car doesnt move and the automatic gearbox warning comes on the MID.

Firstly, is this a failed box, or is this a sensor or something else i could check?

All advise appreciated.

first thing to do is check the fluid level, have you noticed any leaks coming from the car? usually dark red puddles on the ground where you park overnight.

cheers

Yeah Look thru the how-to's and get the fluid changed asap, if there is a leak you will be able to find it easier and hopefully without damaging the box further.

cheers

I think my first action would be to top up the fluid level. If it doesn't respond to that I think it's unlikely a fluid change would do any good, and it will avoid wasting 7 litres of fluid and a few hours.

To check the fluid level, warm the car up, cycle it through each position of the gear selector and with it in park and the engine running, remove the level plug on the driver's side of the gearbox sump and fill until the fluid starts to run back out. Do this with the car as level as possible.

ok, before i top the fluid up is there any other reason i can only select reverse gear?

I can select all forward gears but when trying to move off the revs climb and then the automatic gearbox MID warning is displayed and then car will not move.

I suspect the box is knackered but any other assistance would be muchly appreciated.

It could well be that the box has had it, but it's also possible that the fluid level is low enough that it's sucking air in every position other than reverse and not actuating the clutches. I must admit I did have a feeling that reverse is normally the first to go rather than the last.

Especially if you have seen traces of fluid, it's well worth trying a top-up IMHO. Have you had any symptoms while driving? Slipping, sluggish changes, etc? If not, there's a good chance that the box hasn't been damaged IMHO.
