Wheel Wobble . . .
« on: 08 January 2009, 22:55:08 »

The MV6 has been pulling to the left quite a bit recently, so today got it 4 wheel laser aligned.

Turned out it was out by a fair bit, so after that drove it home, and it was much better, still pulling slightly to the left but that was a dodgy tyre, the front 2 are now the same.

Heres where it gets interesting,

0-30mph fine, no wobble/pull etc.

38-50 ish ALOT of wheel wobble/movement, if I take my hands off the wheel you can see it wobbling/shaking quite a bit.

55-60+ its completly fine again no probs what so ever.

Im presuming by the fact that the alighnments been checked/tyres etc, that it could be brake or suspension related?

MV6 you say, is it a prefacelift with 17" twin spoke irmscher wheels? If yes then vibration could be result of buckled wheels as those 17" twin spokes are very soft. Had loads of trouble with them myself.

Best to get the wheels balanced first as the others have suggested before assuming the worse  :-/

Like he says but use a 5 stud balancer, cone balancer is not accurate enough for the omega as a rule.

But if they are buckled youll be waisting you time and money, may be worth jacking the car on stands and spinning them while checking in and outside edges for wobbles or dings. Otherwise more easily spotted on a balancer. Hth

I agree, and would add check the tyres and make sure none are damaged, with say distorted walls which can be the result of hitting debris. ;)

I'm surprised that the place you got the alignment done at didn't recommend getting the wheels balanced tbh

http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk/

who many members have raved over in sorting out their alignment / running problems. 8-) 8-)  Not too far away fro you. ;) ;)

Thanks all :)

Headley tyres usually gets all my business as there brilliant for that sort of thing.

Tyre wise there all fine, when I got it alligned they carried a check on all of them, and they were fine.

They didnt mention anything about balancing though . . . . .

Hmmm will pop down to Headley tyres and get them balanced.

If one of the wheels is buckled, how much are we sort of talking about for another one?

Also approx price for the balancing?

Pitchfork, Where abouts are you? As Im from Ashford Hill, but as a rule Newbury is the closest place people have heard of!

I had the same problem with my Elite driving under 75 was fine but over 75mph wobbled like a snake in bag took it to WIM they checked it over o/s/r tyre was bald on theinside edge three wheel balances later no more wheel wobble totally cured. Might pay you to take a trip to WIM in Chesham, Bucks they know there stuff and will advise you of any problems you might have with any of the suspension.

I'm very close - about 3 miles at the most in the old, original part of the Village at the edge of Pamber forest.
Headley always balance new tyres when fitting. I too had wobble at about 50 mph recently & took it in for balancing thinking that perhaps I had thrown a balancing weight. One tyre had a damaged side wall probably caused by hitting a pothole & they declined to balance it & suggested that it as could fail at any time I had to have a new tyre (which I did)
You could not see the damage but the fitter showed me by running his hand around the wall & you could feel it as a bulge.
I was impressed by the fact that they bother to carry out a check as a matter of routine in the interests of their customers' safety, not cynically to sell a new tyre. This emphasises the importance of not buying used tyres from a scrappy or anywhere else for that matter.

Pitchfork
Got there first, but will suggest as well,Im pretty sure there is a tyre or tyres that have internal damage IE the cords have let go round the tyre rim, which could have occured hitting a pothole.
