exhaust rattle
« on: 13 January 2009, 10:27:18 »

ive got an occasional, very light rattle at idle which sounds like its coming from the mid-exhaust. it lasts for a few seconds and repeats randomly. im hoping its something like a loose heat-shield but the sound is like possibly something inside the pipe?

at 6.5 years old, 36k on the original exhaust, whats likely?

heat shield possible. But on an 02 i would expect the rear box section join to be rotten just behind the clamp on the 2 mid sections. Meaning box and 2 mid sections needed from the cats back, hence the term cat back exhaust you may have seen on here.

Mine is a late 52 plate 03 car but 70k miles on it so you "may"  have more life in yours.

You may find this usefull, note, thread starts on page 2.

hmmm - im surprised the exhaust has lasted this long tbh but its garaged and doesnt do short journeys (or many journeys at all actually). id be inclined to go for genuine VX if thats what it is but i see theres now some questions about the quality of genuine.

its going into the garage tomorrow for a diagnosis so fingers crossed.

anyways - thanks.

6 years seems par for the course on the original GM system.  I have had 2 that have gone at that age and there are several others on here with similar experience.

Current consensus on here is that there is little benefit of the Vx system over something like Eternal car.

thanks.

well vauxhall recommended replacing the two mid-sections which are rusted but said the rear was sound (?). they also warned the noise could be cat-related altho id be surprised if it was. having brought it home, it definitely sounds like theres a loose object inside one of the pipes (hopefully not a piece of cat).

Ahhh, yes, a rattling exhaust.

An easy, free fix. See here:

here is what happened - the rear section broke apart as the centre sections were being taken off (surprise). the cats were ok so a full vauxhall system from the cats back. not cheap at £564 supplied and fitted but i think it looks and sounds fine. the tail pipe isnt chrome but it looks almost like it could be stainless. i could be wrong tho.

but thanks for all comments  :)
