Air Con issues

I had my system leak tested and regassed in Oct after it had stopped working due to lack of pressure.  All was well with everything working fine on New Years Eve but today its not working :(

I dont think it could be leaking so close to it being tested and there is no trace of the die put in at the time of regasing.  

I've checked the fuse well all the other systems that share it are working fine so it must be ok.

Any other idea's?

you should be able to see the centre of the pulley turning if the compressor is actually running when the a/c is on.

Yes mate it's not it also raises the idle slightly which it's not doing either.

Bloody annoying as it cost me £65 to get it tested and gassed.

It does sound like you're out of gas.  :( The place I used recently does free refills while they're looking for the leak.

If it is air conditioning, rather than climate control, it is possibly because the outside temperature is too low.   It must be at least above 5 degrees Centigrade for it to work. ::) ::)

I suppose it depends how much dye is in the system. My leak was on the compressor. So far ......touching wood ..... so good!  :y  :y

Ah thats interesting it is just air con I didn't know that are you sure as I'm certain it was working on New Years Eve?

I now always have it on and the instant fuel comp reading shows 0.3 when it's turned on as against 0.2 when it's not.

The guy that regassed it knew his stuff and very carefully weighed the gas before filling.

Needs to be above 4ºC for aircon to work.

If >  than 4ºC and centre of a/c compressor not turning its either low gas or compressor clutch knackered/stuck.

To check clutch disconnect elec plug from compressor and put 12v across terminals (ensure polarity correct) & you should hear clutch throw in with a clunk.

I have it turned on after advice from the guy who gassed it he said it keeps the system lubed and running properly  :y

But I did have the heat controls set to heat as it was well cold that day.

Make sure the cars up to operating temp and put your heater to full and then set the vents to footwell, your air con will come on immediately or around 30sec depending on the year of the car, the cooling fans will come on too.  Check the aircon pipes below bonnet to see if there cool.   They won't go ice cold at this time of the year, but it will cause you compessor to click on if theres enough gas in it.

Your using the demisting characterstics of air con, the heater being on full essentialy tricks the system into coming on at below 5 degrees.

If compressor doesn't click on it could be -

1. A leak
2. Possible Major over gassing, but at this time of the year the pressure on the system when in use is unlikely to trip pressure switch.
3. Electrical - check fuses, wires, relays.  
4. Cooling fans.  Check fuses. Make sure your the cooling fans are working as they should. Let your car idle and ensure the fans kick in when it gets hot.  If they're not working the air con will not come on at all. To check the relays are working okay, you can disconnect 1 cooling fan for a few secs when the cars hot, the other fan should go to higher speed on the omega. If the cooling fans ain't working the air con relay will not come on.

Can't be sure where the low pressure switch is on the v6 the air con piping at the moment, it's been while since I worked on one, but it you can unplug it and bridge the connecters with a paper clip to get the system to click on if all else fails, if it works its gas or a faulty low pressure switch, just do this to check it only!

Been bit busy of late not had time to do anything about the problem until now.  I've visually checked over the whole system and I cant find any trace of the dye that was put in to find leaks and it was defiantly put in I watched him do it.

So assuming there is no leaks it's either the clutch or the pressure switch, to test these I need to find the switch but I've got know idea where it is anybody know?

Some of the dyes added are only visible under Ultraviolet or Infared light .. so the fact you can't see it doesn't mean it hasn't leaked .... best bet is a PROPER (not kwakfat) car aircon place and have the system checked
