Mini facelift and original omega tailgates.
« on: 24 January 2009, 20:14:19 »

I have a mini facelift 1998 and need a tailgate for its VIC check and was wondering if the earlier one will fit and will the high level brake light fit on to the earlier one.

Thanks for your help.

Original and mini f/l should be interchangeable. Don't think f/l will fit. Not 100% certain but pretty sure it won't.
Them Wot Knows will be along shortly no doubt.

the tailgate will fit, however, a couple of minor differences depending on the age of car the donor tailgate is coming from

94-95 had a different heated rear screen to the 96-97 models. different heated elements.

96-97 dont have the high level brakelight and the boot griffin is a different style.

98-01 have the 3rd brakelight and chrome griffin badge,

you will have to run the wiring for the 3rd brakelight if you plan to fit it. and use the inside trim and brakelight assy aswell.

aslong as you get the right colour then the rest is easy.

didnt think youd need to change your tailgate if damaged for a VIC check,[as long as it shuts of course], i believe the check is only to make sure the cars I,D is correct & not a "ringer" ;) the test does not test for roadworthyness as such but mainly authenticity.& of course its just another government making scheme [or scam] ;)

I rang VOSA and they said they check the id of the car and to see if the repair has been carried out. I thought it would be better to change it as they cant find any excuses then to refuse the test and charge me more for another one.

i take it its a cat"C", i took a rover in & as i couldnt get a wing the right colour i took it off & bashed it around a bit, didnt look brilliant but got my test o,k, the main problem i had was i couldnt get insurance on it until it was VIC tested so had to pay to get it trailored there, best of luck with it anyway  :y

hmmm, at first i was going to say fill it, but now ive seen it perhaps "readymix" would me more appropriate ;D you could try a lump of 4x2 & a lump hammer to get the worst out until a tailgate in colour comes up ;)
