Should I cut it?
« on: 31 January 2009, 12:56:20 »

I am on my second weekend trying to fit an Eternal exhaust to my estate. :'(

I think the rear pipe out of the centre o/side silencer is either too long, or not bent properly.   If I mount the o/s centre section and back box, the back box is almost falling off the rubbers,  and when I come to offer up the n/s section , it doesn't reach.

I'm tempted to cut 4cm or so off the os rear pipe, but obviously when I've done it, I can't stick it back later. ::)

Its a shame as I know others have had good experience with these systems.

Any suggestions before I unearth the hacksaw..?

well, its Eternal part 17235 (the os centre) - this is stamped on the box and is correct per their web site for an estate.   I had assumed that the saloon part would be significantly different,  although the pics look quite similar.

This is the one I have

I guess the question is - is the problem limited to the length of the pipe?

I would fit both centre sections and make sure that they both sit properly and that the pipes are exactly parallel where the back box fits. If they are, chances are trimming the longer one to the same length as the shorter one will work. If they're not accurately aligned the back box won't fit on both of them anyway and this points to it being inaccurately bent.

Have you tried getting a replacement out of Eternalcar?

I have been trying to figure that out - not entirely straightforward in multiple dimensions..

Mounting the os section only and the backbox casues contact with the rear drop link (if that's what its called).  I was assuming (hoping) that fitting the os section would pull it away (more central).

If you mean the very last straight where the two pipes enter the backbox , yes they are reasonably parallel.   If the near side was shorter, I am sure I could get the back box on.  There may be fouling further forward but I guess a garage with a torch could fix that worse case.

I did talk to eternal during the week.  After initially spinning the - 'they are supposed to be like that.. bla,bla - a replacement would be just the same', and 'take it to a garage', they did agree to me trimming it.   Whether they would exchange if that doesn't work will be another discussion no doubt.

I assume that the way these things are made is that a straight length of pipe is cut to length and then bent according to the pattern - I guess error could come it at any point though :-/

Hmm. :-/ I guess the error could be between bends or simply that the pipe was cut to the wrong length. I guess these exhausts may be too good to be true after all.

If they have suggested cutting it I would say that doesn't affect your rights. You have only done what they asked...

Might be worth speaking to James as he fitted one to his facelift estate - with no problems at all IIRC.

if you have the rear end on a jack with the suspension at full travel then it will hit the rear drop arm, when the car is lowere and the suspension settles into its normal working position it will move away from it and clear! :y
