ABS ECU
« on: 24 January 2009, 17:40:41 »

arrrgghhhhh....i'm trying to change my abs ecu...and its bloody driving me mental.... it's so hard to get at the bolts....!!

so far i have got the the top two out and the middle left one out...

next i'm going to try and grow really long fingers and stick my eyes on the end of a long stick and poke it down in the engine bay so i can see what the hell i'm doing...!!!!! :o :o :o :o

just been to maplins and got some longer tork bits that may help....

gonna have a couple of beers and chill out and start afresh in the mornning....

Nick :-?

Aye, "refitting is the reverse of removal" - so practise swearing backwards...

well.....just finished.... and i'm bleedin knackered.....!

the missis is just setting off to the in-laws....she's the test pilot today...!!

cant say i enjoyed that little job to say the least, it was bloody awful...

not only was it a bugger to get out and the replacement in but i also managed to break a couple of things along the way..i'll get to that..!!!

So this is how i did it.....

removed battery
removed small fuse carrier that sits above battery
removed main ecu from compartment next to battery so loom can be tucked out of the way to the right of engine bay
removed top hose to rad
removed the three multi connectors behind battery
undid the screw that holds bracket for above connectors
undid lower steering fluid pipe from fluid res..
disconeted pipe and catch fluid in a small flat container...(tupperware from kitchen...but dont tell the wife...!)
move pipe out of way
now you should have room to get the bugger out....

the pink plastic clip that holds to plug in is very brittle....mine broke right away....the only way i could get the plug off was to break off the edge of the long side of the plug surround both sides....to reconnect i have sealed with some silicon and used a couple of cable ties to surcure....

the other cable has a small clip to the front....smaal screwdriver to pop off.

ecu bolts.... i could only get 5 of the 6 off...2 top, 2 middle and one bottom right hand side.....then just prized the ecu off snapping the last screw mounting off the ecu which is plastic.....(hey it was bust anyway.....!)

now the ecu is out of the way i an see the last bolt that i couldnt get too..... and there was no chance i was going to get it.....! there is a metal plate that covers the access to that last bolt on the right bottom....just about go it out with the ecu gone....?

so repeat in reverse.......!!!!

i only put back the 2 top and 2 middle bolts and seems surcure enough to me....

the wife has just rang and everything is fine....she's at the in-laws 15 miles away....

checked the speedo was showing the right MPH by putting the satnav (garmin) into speed mode.....showing basically the same as before the ecu went bang....

time for a shower and then rock out on guitar hero before she returnes to put the dinner on....... :D

Nice one m8!
When I did mine I only removed top hose.
Best way of shifting pink plastic clip is to ignore the two lugs and slip a knife blade between pink bit and ecu body - waggle and it'll move ok - bit of wd40 & out it'll slide.

Got all 6 bolts out OK.

Only put 5 back in - got fed up and ignored bottom right.  4 bolts round main body should be ok.

Did mine yesterday
Absolute pig of a job.

The only thing I did differently was to undo the two 13mm nuts securing the abs box into its holder, then twisted the complete unit up at about 45degs. Makes getting the plugs & screws out a lot easier.
I did this under advisement from my tame mechanic, seemingly the brake pipes are ok with this, and went back into place without problems
Took about 2 hours to remove & about 1.5 to refit. But I'm sure this time would go down if I need to do it again( bloody better not!!)

Yeah first time allow 3.5-4 hours...reduces each time you do it...

Much quicker if removing from a scrap car cos you can just undo the brake pipes, remove the whole ABS unit and removing the 6 bolts is then a piece of cake :)
