Lost a tool! Remove lefthand engine mount?
« on: 08 February 2009, 13:25:33 »

Hi guys,

was working on the leaking oil cooler plate and been waiting for my crowsfoot sockets to come through.  Got them finally and had just started to move the first of the two oil cooler pipes by the oil filter housing when it fell....

..and I cant see it anywhere!  I have used a mirror to get in and around the engine mount, I have gotten my fingers in there as much as I can and even blindly poked and prodded with a grappler....all to no avail!

Should I take off the mount?  Is it difficult to do?  Ta in advance...

Not hard...16mm socket...just awkward to get the socket on to it and turned as limited space because of the TC/ABS unit...but its doable with a little patience...if you can get a small ratchet on from beneath thenit would be easier...generally once the initial pressure is released you can remove the nut by hand  :y

I am guessing that I will need to prop up the engine with a suitable jack too?

Oh wait, you wanna remove the whole engine mount?? Or just undo it to release the engine up a little?

Top nut is as said...then the engine mount itself is heldonto a bracket on the chassis by a nut on the underside of the bracket...17mm I think...

Engine will need propping up a fair bit to remove the engine mount if engine still in situ...

Removing the top bolt though will allow the engine to be propped up a little to see if the tool drops out...no need really to remove the whole mount  :y

I think I will have to remove the entire thing with the engine in place, I got my fingers around the back of the mount and it seems there are some crevaces that would house a nice tool like that......

.....or I just buy a new socket and be more careful......?

Try poking a strong magnet down there - may work or give u a clue where it is.

You need to remove your missing tool.  just imaging how you would feel if you went into hospital and the surgeon left the forceps inside you- could do all sort of damage!  I know it is a PIA but go find it!  even with one of those magnetic thingies

Theres no point in me using a magnetic tool if i cant see it, besides the only one avaible here is a straight one, I would need a bendy one to get into where I reckon it is.  I have poked around with coat hangers, grabby tools used a mirror with a headlight... cant even see it!  I think once I get it going again it'll just fall out! There's a few speed bumps here that'll do the trick  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I managed to drop a socket down the side of my V6 - couldn't see it from above or feel it from underneath.  Poked my extendable, BENDY, magnetic thingy down and around the side of the block and heard and felt the socket move onto magnet.  Pulled it out no probs.

With right kit anything is possible :-/

you should be able to put your hand up from underneath and have a feel about for it, it will be stuck in the wishbone arm or around the oil filter/cranksensor area ....maybe

wouldnt mind betting its sat on top of the gearbox from you description!! had a couple of sockets st up there after disappearing down the back of the engine!! there are a coupe of webs that strengthen the casing they are just the right size to hold sockets etc and stop them falling down!!! also had one sit between the starter and engine block and the spanner managed to get in between it had to take starter off to get it out!!!
