Auto gear lever sticking in park position.
« on: 14 February 2009, 23:35:25 »

Hi all. Occasionally the auto gear lever sticks in the park position and wont release. The only way to get it to release is to lever out the snow mode switch, and manually depressing the little yellow lever that is then visible whilst lifting the collar on the gear selector. Not the easiest thing to do with large hands. Any suggestions on cause and remedy. Cheers, Mark. :y

Sounds like the locking solenoid is sticking.  When you press the brake pedal there in normally a click as the solenoid retracts, sounds like its not working or clearing properly.

You do have the ignition on and your foot on the brake when you try and move out of park ... don't you ??? There is a safety interlock that requires power to be removed .. :)

If you are doing this then its either the switch or the solenoid playing up ... AFAIK there is nothing else in the circuit

Yes ignition on and brake depressed.    :y :y

How easy are the switch and solenoid to replace?

The book of lies calls it a "selector lever pawl contact switch" ... 7B.6 para 33-36 .. and it doesn't look too bad.. seems it would take longer to take the centre consul out than to change the swith itself !! I can't find any reference to the brake pedal switch .. I'm guessing it is the same one that does the brake lights ?? in which case its 12.5 para 20-22 and seems dead easy ... :)

Might just need a drop of oil on it if you can access it.
