Major Oil leak
« on: 17 February 2009, 16:12:15 »

Hi Guys,

I bought a 98 2ltr 16vGLS back in December with only 75000 on the clock for £600. At the time I thought I had got a bargain cause the garage wanted £900 but since then I've topped it up with nearly 3ltr of oil.

I've looked underneath and noticed that the bottom end is covered in oil from above the sump seal and is dripping oil after every journey. The weird thing is that there is also oil further back underneath the car, is this just air pushing it back that way when i've been driving it?

Any ideas? I just hope its not going to be expensive!!

I'll try and take some pics!

Cheers, Daz.  :-[

It is quite likely that your cam cover is leaking as this is so common, but that's a hell of a lot of oil you're losing!  I'd take off the timing belt cover and have a look in there too.  I recently did a block-upwards overhaul on my X20XEV and found that the camshaft oil seals had disintegrated and oil was pouring down the front of the engine.  These were replaced and I also replaced the oil pump seal although I'm pretty sure it was ok.

Buy a can of brake/carb cleaner for a couple of quid and use this to blast your sump and lower block clean of oil. The run the engine and see if you can spot where it's coming from.

Thanks Closeau!

I took it to a garage yesterday and they got it on the ramp. Not good news, the camshaft seal has gone as has the rocker cover seal, so oil is pouring down the back of the engine. They've quoted me £160 - £200 to fix, do you think its worth getting the clutch replaced whilst they have the gear box off?

Anyone?

Seems a reasonable price at least...cant hurt to do the clutch if its not going to be too expensive...

They're not going to take the gearbox off or take the engine out to do these jobs!  There's a fair bit of work invoved as the timing belt has got to come off and depending on when that was last done you might want to consider replacing that and the idler pulleys (and possibly the water pump) but your camshaft oils seals are at the front!

Maybe they're talking about the crankshaft rear oil seal?

Sounds unlikely that two things would be causing the problem. I'd say they're hedging their bets because they haven't done a proper diagnosis.

Ok it was me who got it wrong! Its the main rear oil seal and rocker seal!

If the clutch needs doing as well it could cost around £600 :'(

If both of those have gone you can bet that the breathers are blocked - which will be what caused it in the first place..
