Coolant problems again..
« on: 19 February 2009, 06:45:37 »

Sorry to post on coolant again - I'm quite bored of coolant issues myself  >:(. Last time it was oil in the coolant - had the oil pump done. That was about October '08.

Now it is losing coolant quickly. After about a mile, most is gone and the car starts overheating with steam rising from the bonnet.

Is it likely to be a simple pipe/valve/joint issue??

Oil in the coolant was probably the oil cooler and not the oil pump ;)

What engine is it you have and where is the steam coming from?

Yeah - sorry was the oil cooler!! :D

Its a 2.5 V6 auto '98 and the steam comes from drivers side, front of the bonnet. Is the significant?

Thanks guys - I had mooted HBV myself but it could be a silted/blown rad. I will get it checked over.

Do any other coolant parts tend to fail?? Just so I can talk to the mechanic with some basis of knowledge.  :-/

If like you say coolant is being lost quickly, you should be able to see the leak or at least where it is leaking from..
If from at the back of the engine - HBV
If from the front - Radiator
Passenger side where the top hose goes to the transfer pipe from the radiator - Thermostat, Transfer Pipe O rings or Oil Cooler Plate

Hope this helps :y
