My Omega just died on me - HELP

Yesterday I was out driving, everything was normal, except that my EML has been on for a while, it has an error of P1555 that I was going to fix this week.

Anyway car is OK, stop for a visit in a shop. Car starts OK and we go on to the gasstation. On the way in to the station some lights on the display lights up, the Airbag and the brakewarning lights dimly. I shut down at the pump and fill her up.

Then it wouldn't start, it is like that the battery is low. Just suddenly!

Get another guy to hook up battery cables and it spins the crank OK but is totally dead. We had to tow it back home.

I have now checked the trouble codes and get a long list.

P0301-002  Coil 1 don't fire

P1555-000  TPS Signal is implauseible with engine load

P0170-002  Fuel Trim system lean

P0130-002  O2 sensor 1 low voltage

P0560-002  System voltage too low

P1600-000  Program/replace controller

P1612-000  Anti-Theft lock no or wrong signal

P1613-000  Anti-Theft lock no or wrong signal


Quite some troubles  >:(

Is my ECU toasted or what?

It is clearly some electrical problem. Some stuff seems to work but others behave like it has a dead battery. BTW the battery was replaced two years ago and signals good.


I am in need of some good advice to go on with this.

Are you able to clear all the codes, then see whats left?  Some (eg voltage low) are likely a result of the battery, so would be nice to know whats actually current

very limited knowledge here but similar faults crop up on rangerovers if battery is low/dead and or alternator is shagged. might be worth checking outputs of each with a multimeter if you can get it to run!!

Those codes are just after a clear.

I guess some of them are just a consequence of something else.

The odd thing about the low voltage is that it just five minutes earlier started without any problems, no hint of low battery.
And when we hooked it up with cables to another car it ran the starter as normal, but it was dead as a rock and didn't even try to fire.

Have you checked your battery terminals and/or earth strap connections ??

Sounds like a low voltage problem to me, which can be caused by poor/loose/corroded connections.

Poor earthing I reckon, especially given the symptoms here.

Affix a jump lead from a good secure point on the engine, (such as a manifold nut), and clip the other end to the battery negative terminal.

See what happens - I wouldn't be surprised to find that everything returns to normal. Let us know how you get on.

I had exactly the same symptoms on the QX ---- turned out the alternator was fried!!!   Indeed when we popped on a power pack and started her the alternator burst into flames!  Prior to this runnimg normally with no symtoms of low charge, no warning lights etc  :-?

Hi mate, had similar probs with my Tractor just recently - after swapping starter motor and re-conning the alternator, all the electrics were working slow and the battery quickly discharged, turned out to be poor connection on low tention Neg wire on starter. ps never did thank Sethsmate for all your pointers!! :y :y

I have a suspicion towards that direction. When I drove away from home, when the car was cold there was a small rattling noise, like when you don't have any oilpressure. It went away after 15 seconds. It was related to the engine speed. My first thought when thhis happened was that maybe the alternator had gone.

Strange though that the batterylight has never come on.

I'll dismount the alternator tomorrow and have it checked.

DO THE JUMP-LEAD TEST FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as per my earlier post - trust me on this!
A mere half amp output from the alternator will knock out the 'charge' light - it's not really a true indication in this instance.
