Frustrated
« on: 25 February 2009, 17:20:15 »

Recently i had an issue where the car would idle up and down between 500 and 1200 rpm when cold and at normal temp, from cold it is even worse and stalls all the time unless you keep the revs up however i was advised to change the ICV and this would eliminate the problem, to which i have done but still have the same problem, i cant see any leaks on any of the vacum pipes either.Any help would be appreciated before i take it to Vauxhall.... :(

PS The problem is not constant..however very annoying

I take it that the ICV is properly seated?

Has the engine been stripped down for any reason recently?  Reason for asking is there may be leaks at the seals under the plenum.

Its also worth doing a paperclip test (see the Maint. Guide Section) just to see if that throws anything up.

and please don't take it to Vauxhall - you will get much better and cheaper help on here, just be patient.

Yes the ICV is sealed in quite tight, as far as i know the engine has not been stripped down recently. The only problem i did notice was that the screw holding the ICV bracket in was missing.

for the revs to rise more than the engine is asking there has to be more air getting in than the engine knows about. The air is measured at the maf sensor(mass air flow) which is next in line from the air filter. At any point between the maf and the combustion chamber air is getting in somehow, most likely. Easiest way to find the leak is to get a can of carb cleaner and spray along the induction system and vac pipes. If the carb cleaner is drawn in by the engines induction the revs will rise. At this point you have found the area of your leak. Then wipe off thoroughly. Hth

For the purposes of cleaning, yes. Your engines idle is controled by the icv though its seperate to the throttle controlled by your foot. Doubt throttle body/butterflys would cause this as its cable operated. Drive by wire, on 2.2, 2.6, 3.2 maybe...
