Performance L81/X30XE
« on: 18 January 2009, 23:47:00 »

I'm trying to find someone who can steer me in the right direction.
I wanna make power, for my 3.0L but there's no help for it here in the states.
I see alot of nice/fast Omega's but what all can be done to it to make power?

We are slightly better off than over the pond as our units are different to yours with higher compression ratio so we are already past the 200bhp mark straight from the factory!

In our case an ecu chip upgarde can yield upto a 10% gain and with some light fettling even more can be sought.

Your best option would be to drop an LS2 or better in!

And fuel economy? With the chip i mean.

Who makes the ECU for you?
I can raise compression, maybe do euro-spec. ECU and wiring swap.

Its a Bosch unit.

Compression change was achieved by fitting dished pistons on the Caterra lump

What is stock compression on the Omega? Stock HP?
Are the Bosch ECU's plentiful in salvage yards over there?
How hard do you think it would be for me to find someone with a parts car to have the engine wiring and ecu?
Do any of you know anyone?
Got a pic of Omega ecu?
The only Bosch ecu controlled GM cars here that I could get an ecu for is the Saturn ecotec 2.2L.
The Catera, uses a Bosch Motronic ECU. Where would I find the chip, you guys use?

10.8:1
211bhp

That's only about 10 more than your lower compression engine.
I'd guess that you'd just need to up the compression and then fit the Euro spec ECU to the see the benefits? Maybe a lot of other functions that operate via the ECU that differ on a Euro spec ECU though?

Here is a link to a little tuning overview of the X30XE engine: http://www.opelforum.si/index.php?showtopic=1785&mode=linear

The euro spec x30xe had a manual throttle, though, whereas, IIRC, the US spec had drive-by-wire so an ECU change would not be easy.

I don't believe the ECU would make much difference, TBH. The compression ratio is the main factor. As long as you feed it with high enough octane fuel that it doesn't knock retard it will work with the original ECU.

Actually, I don't have a catera, I have a pontiac fiero, the engine is from a '97 catera. which uses a manual tb. the tranny is from a saturn.
So I could use the euro-spec ecu.

Would an ECU from a 3.0 be any use to you?

Sounds feasible then. Do you know what engine management system it uses? Non-DBW UK cars are Bosch Motronic 2.7.1. If the pinout is the same it should be a straight swap. And a UK tuning chip would plug straight in.

Does it have the same ancillaries? Multiram air intake, SAI, EGR? Might have to fool the ECU with some resistors if not all the actuators are present.

I'm sure you meant 2.8.1 (earlier) and 2.8.3 (later) for 2.5 and 3.0 engines ::)
