01 2.2i automatic gearbox problem
« on: 06 March 2009, 14:57:33 »

I have an intermittent problem with the autobox on my car. When I start it in the morning it generally works fine. Even after a short run say just to the shops when I go to start it again it will only start in third gear and I have to change the gears manually. Sometimes turning off the ignition and turning it on again fixes the problem, sometimes not. Some days it will work well with the problem hardly occurring and other days it happens a lot. The "spanner" icon is on all of the time. The guy who services my car said it is a specialised and expensive fix. Has anyone had a similar problem or advice please?

Thanks

Gerry

Where are you?

You need to get codes of both gearbox and engine read.  Initial reaction is cam sensor, but don't change anything until we know the fault codes.

I'm in Dublin and don't have a fault code reader. Is there a basic one you would recommend maybe from Halfords?

Should only start in N or P. Do you mean it only drives in third :question

When gearbox is in limp, it locks in 3rd, unless you 'manually' change.

Ideally you want one that can read gearbox codes as well.  Which rules out pretty much all the generic stuff.

Might be worth going to a garage and just getting engine codes read (and gearbox if they can).

I'm suspecting a P0340 stored in engine, along with a P07xx.  In gearbox, I'd suspect a load of CAN Receives errors.

Thanks guys, I'll get the codes read and take it from there. I'm guessing cam sensor won't be too expensive.

(I meant it drives in limp mode and only starts in neutral or park)
