How do I increase a trolley jack height safely?
« on: 11 March 2009, 13:04:48 »

I've got an irritating Halfords trolley jack and axle stand kit - while the trolley jack will lift my mig high enough (380mm) to get axle stands under it at their lowest height, I can't get it high enough to use the second (higher) locking point on the stands.

Can someone advise on a SAFE way to raise the trolley jack height so I can use the higher setting on my stands? I can't comfortably get under the car on the lower setting, and as it looks like i'll have to do an ATF and filter change soon, I could use all the wriggle room I can get.

Cheers
John.

Cheers - I'll have to dig some suitably heavy duty ones out. The last ones I used split as soon as they took the cars' weight!

Off cuts from fence posts work well

Cheers lads.

Am I right in assuming there's no current maintenance guide on changing an autobox filter, or changing the ATF? The only guide I can see talks about removing the level plug and topping up that way, which might be a pain in the backside for 7 litres of ATF.

Daft question, why use axle stands? Surely ramps are ideal for this job?   :-/

With my car when I try to drive the car up the ramps (forward) various bits of the trim get in the way! :o :o

Therefore I always jack my car up steadily using blocks, axle stands and the ramps. ;)

I have done 2 ATF changes now, best way is using ramps, but use rear wheels.

Done an MV6 which is lower than normal, and that goes on fine if you reverse up...
