auto gear notification
« on: 13 March 2009, 07:22:41 »

Is there any way to easily (without a code reader or similar) tell which gear my auto box is in?
I was hoping to take feeds from a multi-connector or something like that and display it somewhere.

Is it that simple or have I got no chance?

Thanks

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

i would imagine it would be pain to sort out, for a start youd have to i/d the wires that go to each solenoid [doubt if the haynes book will help much], i know they go to the round plug on top of the g/box & back to the blue plug/socket by the battery then to the g/box ecu, i know there aint much to do in this town bumbazor so i assume you are doing this out of boredom mate ;D

They get obvious after a while - you also have the lock up mode to consider

Haha Alf yes there's not much to do in Worksop is there!

I just thought if I had a spare few hours I could knock something up.
What I was hoping for was individual 12v wires for each of the gears.

What's lock up mode?

Might be easier to try and do in a PIC or similar decoding live data.  Whatever way you do it, is it really worth the effort?

I reckon its only worth the effort if its as simple as finding live feeds for each individual gear. I've no problem doing the wiring.

Its not - they are direct feeds to solenoids and sensors.  Not sure if you could use some logic whilst analysing the feeds...

You could take a feed from the gear change lever lights to show P R and N but would only tell you that your in D and 1 2 3 only if held in that gear manually :-/.

But do you actually want or need to know what gear you're in, surely that's why you buy an auto  ;). The only times I've been in the wrong gear is when I've selected 2 when going down steepish hills & then forgot to selrct D afterwards. It's only when you get up to 30 or 40 & you realise your revs are high ......

The question was if it was possible, not why I want to do it.

And yes, I do know which gear it is in but I would have thought a visual indication wouldn't be too much trouble to fix up. I have a blank space next to the radio where the sat nav screen would go and wanted something to go there.

What's lock up mode?

A few years ago, i had a Passat with a 5 speed auto box. It used to 'lock' the torque convertor (so the engine speed stayed constant to the road speed much like a manual box) in all the gears iirc to help performance/ economy when suitable.

Should my pre-facelift Omega do the same? (It does not).

Appologies for the slightly off topic.
