Mayo has me all confused
« on: 22 March 2009, 17:53:28 »

Hi all,
Got a message on my 02 2.6 mig yesterday stating check oil. So checked oil and was down about half way on dipstick when cold. So thought I would add a little oil, shock horror when I took Oil filler cap off there was loads of mayo in the filler tub and on cap!!
I have checked condition of oil and all ok and water is clear too, the car has not overheated once since I got it in January and there has been no loss in fluids (unlike my last Rover 75!!).
Is there any possibility of water getting into filler tube, enough to generate mayo. The car was completely clear of mayo 3 months ago.
Any suggestions welcome.

Mayo in the filler nick is very common if you do lots of short trips, give it a blast down the m/way and it'll dissapear or just clean it out. It's because the neck doesn't get as warm as the cam covers so it condensates :y

This is caused by short journeys. The filler neck sits quite high above the engine and the condensation collects up there with oil mist and turns into Hellmans finest,on longer journeys it gets burnt off before it can accumulate.longer journeys and using vx oil will help.
The same thing is probably happening to your breather system and this will cause problems,i.e.the camcover gaskets will let go and fill the plug wells with oil which in turn damages the HT components,so follow the guide and clean the breathers out at least once a year. :y

Thanks again for the info. Will certainly keep an eye on this and make sure that I keep the mayo on the chicken sandwich  ;)

Scared me rigid too, the first time i found that...give it a long journey and it soon dissapears, but if there's lots then it's worth cleaning it out
