Dies with no warning - on the M1

Hi,

I had the pleasure of breaking down on the M1 today, with my 4 year old and 20 month old! I can think of much better ways of spending an afternoon!

The car was running fine, then with no warning the engine died leaving the engine warning light on. I coasted and tried starting the engine by putting into gear and by turning the ignition but with no joy so pulled onto the hard shoulder. After a couple of mins it still wouldn't start. The friendly AA man arrived and it started with no problems!

However after about a mile the same thing happened (with AA man following ready to assist). His fault reader wouldn't work my car and so we ended up getting towed home. If I start the car it idles with no problems for several mins and then cuts out, no overheating or any warnings.

Any ideas?

Crank sensor do a paperclip test in the morning you will most certainly get code 19  :y

Do a paperclip test and post up the codes :y Most likely be a 19 amongst them.

Thanks guys. I'll give that a go. Assuming it is the crank sensor is that an expensive part? Is it easy to fix.

Oh boy, those symptoms sound familiar ;D.  At least yours failed in the UK :-[

I have just mentioned your symptoms to Mrs TheBoy, and she has cried out "CRANK SENSOR" as well ;D

Paperclip it, see what it throws up (don't be surprised if there is a MAF or immobiliser code as well as the 19 you are expecting. These other erroneous codes can be ignored for now).

Cheers everyone. Crank sensor it was. Now fixed and working well. While I was looking over the engine I've noticed that I've got oil at the top of the plugs. Where is the most likely place this is from?

Thanks. That looks quite a difficult for a guy like me! How urgent is it to get it fixed, am I ok for a 2000 miles (likely mileage till I can meet up with my mate and get it done)?

Difficult to say. Take a look at the leads as this is where the problem starts. The oil corrodes the rubber leads and this causes a misfire. The resulting misfire can short out the dis pack, blow the CATS and the silencers.....so could end up being very costly!

ouch. I don't like costly!

Are the parts listed in the Cam cover gaskets guide (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564281) the same for the extended plenium?
