I occasionally had this problem in my old S-reg Elite when driving hard up hill, ie maximum load. As you have found, the problem can't be seen when the engine is off.

I concluded that, either by design or because of past maintenance, some of the oil return channels were restricted - remember that oil is pumped around the block. This would cause the sump level to drop when the engine (and therefore the oil pump) was working hard. When the engine stopped, the oil drained back down to the sump.

Apart from the disconcerting oil light on the dash, the only problem I could see is if the sump level drops low enough to starve the pump.

I'm just wondering how do you check a level sensor? I can think of one way to do it - but I'm not going to suggest it!

Turn the ignition on (NOT ENGINE) half way through an oil change.  :y

I have been reading through your replies and it seems to be varying from "keep it topped up and don't worry about it to my engine is going to pack up completely any time now" almost like " I felt some pain in my chest earlier...I am i going to die of a heart attack soon?
Anyway I am not going to worry about it anymore...Incidentally where is the sensor that sends the signal "check oil level"
Cheers all.....

Fastened to inside the lower sump pan, you can see the connector at the back, on top of the rear edge of the sump pan.

afaik there are two oil signals:
'ckeck oil level' - appears when oil level is on half way of min---max (not so dangeorus)
and second signal is 'engine oil level', which is worse, it means the oil level is min or less

the idea is smart - the car tells 'check oil level' because you're loosing it somehow, but you can still drive the car

if there wasn't such notification, you would get only 'engine oil level' signal, when there is already not enough oil for engine to work safely...
