Check oil level mystery?
« on: 23 March 2009, 12:56:53 »

Hi, just return from a trip from Belgium. About half way to Brussels and pushing the car a little, let just say I was keeping up with the BMW's & Merc's (just a tad fast) and cruising along nicely, I suddenly noticed that I was getting the " Check oil level" on the display. Within a few miles I stopped and checked after a minute and found the oil level a whisker away from the max with no visible leaks, water level spot-on and clear. Carried on with the journey and display had cleared, but kept coming back and going. Eventually I stopped again for 15 mins and found level up to max. I did purchased some oil and put a tiny little drop in (100ml). Message cleared and did not appear again for the whole journey and back. I did change the oil prior to journey with Genuine Vx semi synthetic and filled it what I believed was to the max. Could my speed have affected this reading? or does it have to be topped up to the absolute max? Anyone any ideas? :question

It should only come on when the level goes below minimum on the dipstick. Sounds to me like a faulty oil level sensor

I believe there are two messages that can appear one being "Oil level low" and "check oil level" where the low one is where action needs to be taken asap.

In my experience 'Check Oil' appears at half way (.5 litre) down the dipstick.

Best to check again when the car has been standing a decent time.

I think the other message is 'Oil lack' and which means stop now before you ruin your engine..

have had similar warning while 'pushing on' a bit  ::)

i think the high revs / speed means it sloshes about a bit more and can give a temporary low message if it's not topped to the max :-/

I frequently "push it a bit" and have never seen this message..however oil level is monitored religiously. I did get it on my old 2.5 when it had oil siphoned off by a dodgy garage - Check Oil level and then Oil lack. The level was below the minimum mark..

I have done the oil change myself and put in just over 5 litres. After i put in "another drop " the message did not return" but like I said before when I stopped and checked it was as good as touching the max mark..

It should be 5.75L to top mark (assuming filter change)

I went through a bit of this display coming up intermitently but since topping it up no problems. She just likes to be well lubricated I think.

Can somebody point out that it's called North Wales for a reason, lol. Every one of my southern friends always says "How do you fancy coming up to see us or well come down to you." NORTH means up. DOGH!!!!

Read and understood....

Its very very rare though...

Most times though, just stop the car and engine where its safe and check the oil level.  Probably at mid stick or thereabouts.  Top up with oil of choice to the max mark then, off you jolly well....   :y

Hi, thanks for replies. When I topped with 100 ml along the way and covered another 300 miles at high speed she has been as good as gold. On returning home I checked oil which was 1mm over the max.(after a day of standing) Water is like light rose wine with no sign of any contamination. It appears she was to be topped up to the max. ( bit like her owner lol). Will keep an eye on it ....

high speed cornering/braking can fool the sensor due to oil surging in the sump-oil lack is the one to worry about.

I was battling with this particular syndrome a few weeks ago. The message would pop up after say 15 minutes of driving and then appear at random intervals. The oil had been changed and was topped up appropriately. The culprit was found to be the oil level sensor. I would recommend to have that changed.  :y

dear,
my opel 2.2 had on its screen "check oil level" shortly its moter got out of order that its temperature reached 100 and the gasget of the engine head got wornout.
so do not stay looking at your car
I think that it means the oil pump is not working well
