Refitting Heater Rod on a 96 3.0L v6
« on: 21 March 2009, 23:09:23 »

Hi,
I think I've found out why my heater is not working properly :).

When i today removed my radio and ECC unit i saw a rod running across the back above where the back of the radio would sit and the right hand side wasn't attached to anything :(.

I put my hand in and up in to the dash where i would have thought the rod would go and felt a hole in a plastic piece but when i pushed the rod up to try and get it back in the hole it detached itself from the left hand side aswell :'(.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone tell me they know how to get this rod back on as i tried for hours and just couldn't see how you have enough room to refit the right side let alone the left, which i couldn't get near >:( :'( :'( :'(.

     Thanks,
                Pete.

if you find a way pete then please let me know :'(, mine came off [well i pulled it off, long story] & as you say you can feel where it goes but fitting it you need a highly trained stick insect or similar, has your rod got a right angle both ends or is the left hand side end threaded? i know how they go on but only found that out by destroying a scrap cars dash :D, ive now got no heat passenger side which upset the mrs so would like to get it done for a bit of peace :y

i dont have aircon but the setup for the rod is similar i think, mine is quite high up behind stereo so cant even see where it goes but can just about feel it, just not enough room to move my hand about in there :'( you must have slender hands ballcock!

Well Alf if you manage to train a Stick insect or similar then please get in touch as it will probably be cheaper to train and feed than it will cost in plasters and swear box donation :D ;D.

My rod has a right angle at each end, no threads though :).

Why oh why the rod was put on in such a way that it could ever come off is beyond belief, i mean why the hell would you want to remove it >:(.

I could see how ballcock50 was able to reattach the right side because i almost did but the left side is i would have thought an impossibility from the front :o :'(.

If you find a way or get some divine intervention then maybe you'll let me know as i will in the same circumstances :y.

  Hi Chris,
The rod is attached i think at each end to a servo which opens and closes the flaps which determines which way you want the airflow to go :y.

     Hi ballcock,
Would you or anyone have a piccy of the rod attached to what it's supposed to be attached to so that i have some idea as to what I'm looking/feeling for/at :).

the stick insect training is going to take longer than anticipated im affraid due to the language barrier, ive been playing him rosetta stone discs but still not a word :( as for that bar, yes it was the haynes book that led me astray as my panel is in fact screwed in behind the buttons, as i far as i can tell its more to do with heat control rather than vents as mine blows cold on the passenger side all the time but does appear to adjust to different vents, im just awaiting to find a non a/c model in the breakers so i can see where the threaded end goes, unless someone is breaking one they could smash to bits & take a photo, either way they must be crap cos the threaded bit pulled out very easily >:(, & bigtow it must make us a pair of plums as to put this rod back on is b***ocks ;D

Has anyone got any ideas as to how to refit this rod without taking the dashboard out or can show a picture of the rod when it's attached :'(.

PS. If it makes a difference my car has Air-con fitted :y.

as your one has aircon i presume the rod has a "dogleg"on each end, i know the dogleg bits sort of hook through at an angle so getting them both in will be awkward id imagine, ive tried taking the passenger airbag out thinking i could get to it from the side [threaded end on mine] but still couldnt get to it nor see it, i might have another go sometime but it does look like the whole dash has to come to bits :(

Surely having the panel off the front of the heater (I'm assuming it's non-climate I.E. 4 knobs rather that the lcd's) and reconnect it that way? It's only a case of 6 screws and the radio out.

you would think that but im affraid its not that easy as its up a bit from the controls, & if you take the controls out its not a big gap behind it but a series of small holes that just about give room for the vac pipes etc :'(
