When braking it sounded as though it was coming from the front. Replaced both front wheel bearings (slight play in both). Front pads & discs OK, done about 3K. Noise still there but now sounds like coming from the rear Even worse when slowing down. Checked rear brakes and the discs and pads needed doing. Just done rear brake overhaul, new discs & pads, handbrake shoes OK. Checked for play in rear wheel bearings, nothing. Driveshafts turn smooth at hub and diff end. Test drive and the noise is still there. Not so much when driving but seems to make itself known moreso when slowing down. Any ideas guys :-/

Check the diff oil level.

If its a bearing then it would change with vehicle load i.e. when cornering

What is tyre situation? - droning noise from rear is common question for Vectras and Signums and is usually down to tyre issues. Bit of a long shot for problem you have described but tyres is the only thing you have not mentioned so far

Update Checked and topped up rear diff (1/2 a cup). Noise still there. As said before, rear bearings have no play but that`s what I`m beginning to suspect. Symptons; constant drone increasing with engine speed, more pronounced when taking long left or right hand bends. When braking it sounds as though the rear pads are down to the metal not so much a metallic screeching more of a grinding noise. Any more ideas chaps :-/

Sorry about the bump guys. Just flew through the MOT. Got the tester to give the front and rear wheels and rear driveshafts a good going over. Noise deffo sounds like wheel bearing when driving but when braking it still sounds as though the pads are down and grinding the disc. Anything else I can check :question

This is strange...
Often a rear wheel bearing will wiggle the back of the car when decelerating and braking...
If your brakes are OK, and not worn, then diff wine would be the most logical problem...
But you've had these cheched out...

Wonder if its an extremely rare case of the rear driveshaft splines wearing inside the rear hub assembly...??
Could account for the grinding noises...
This problem is rare, and car can drive until spline is too worn, then you go to drive and car will barely move...
Because driveshaft is turning inside wheel hub assembly...

Sorry, not trying to make you feel worse, but its just a possibility...
