Car not locking
« on: 28 March 2009, 08:14:25 »

Hi
though i would share this with you a couple of years ago my old cdx the passenger lock would not lock so i went to the breakers and got one was already off the car. I then took it to my local mechanic who said he would fit it no problem. but told me was wrong side but he had cleaned old one and got it going said could last a month or longer however it lasted till i got rid of car . Now my 3.2 elite as developed same problem on drivers side ah says I i have got one of those so i dug it out but was a bit gungy grease was hard and when i applied some power to it it was reluctant to work i cleaned it off and coated it 3 in 1 spray grease and it worked. But on closer examination i found that the 3 holes in the lock got accsess to all the mechanism so using the lock assy as a guide i took out 1 screw at a time annd sprayed in some wd40 and did each screw in turn and voilla after a slight stutter the lock started working again that was 3 week ago and as not hiccupped since well pleased with job. But........ will the wd40 damage any of the plastic or should i take it of and have it cleaned of properly

TIA
Robert

WD40 won't damage it, I'd suggest using a good PTFE type spray for long term use as WD40 will evaporate. 3in1 do a good PTFE spray and I think Screwfix sell it among others.

Na, the WD40 is good for cleaning cruddy stuff like that, but as Welung666 said - it will evaporate.  It's not a lubricant, however I would say not to bother with proper oil in the lock as it may attract dirt.

Cleaning it as you have done is probably the best route. Imho anyway.

Can't stand the stuff, I use PlusGas for penetration and either 3in1 PTFE spray or spray grease depends what I'm putting it on. I will add the PTFE spray doesn't hold on to dust and dirt at all :y

Yeah ok, I should have said it's not really a lubricant.

To be pedantic then it is, just not a very good one.  Of course WD40 would have you believe it's perfect for just about everything... ::)
