2.5 vs 2.6

Hi
I am thinking of changing my 2.5 auto estate (210K "P" plate)
for a 2.6 Elite Auto estate  (75K "03" plate).
The 2.6 has a FSH and just serviced and had a full cam belt kit fitted.
But:
A mate who works in taxis said that the company he worked for used omega's for years and found the 2.5 were more reliable than the 2.6 when doing high milage.
I keep my cars for years had 3 Carlton's each had over 200K before I scraped them so I would want the 2.6 to last a good number of years (I do 25K a year)

So Is there any truth in the reliablility or are the 2.6 failures just different from the 2.5

The "base" of these two engines is pretty much the same, differences include "coil per plug", no throttle cable and no egr on 2,6, long plenum on 2,6 (or was 2,5 ever made with long plenum?), different compression ratio, 2,6 has more horsepower. IIRC the cylinder dimensions are the same, valves alo (someone could confirm?). So, there should not be anything that would make 2,6 a weaker engine, more like vice versa due to smaller quantity of parts.

He said that they got plug and coil failures on the 2.6.
Also other electrical related problems with the engine.

MAF failures are more common on dbw engines (based on discussions here) but it may as well be due to different ECU. I think that the tolerances for MAF and O2 sensor readings are "too strict" on these newer engines.

Plugs and coils: never heard of any problems

Nah.....coil per plug setup normaly good for 100K +

The plugs should be changed a bit more often than the 80K service times though!

Its the same lump really with a different management setup, bore and stroke are different to.

So the reliability is about the same for 2.5 and 2.6 as long as they are serviced.
I must admit I like the 2.6 Elite but not the wood trim as it looks false my 2.5 has the fake carbon fiber.
It's £3600 private sale from someone I sort of know.
So still thinking about it.

£3600 is more than top dollar though buddy so make certain its a good un !!!

2.6 is a larger bore than 2.5 but same stroke

2.5 and 2.6 seem to have similar reliability - yes the cpp modules fail (but then the 2.5 has dis and ht lead failures around same mileage).

One issue I have seen twice on later V6 engines is the DBW throttle body failing. I think you could consider yourself unlucky if it did fail, but its around £300 iirc.

How much do you think I should pay if I go for the Elite.

tend to find prices on here are a little lower than on the outside in my experience. FL Elites esp.also seem to price higher than any book price i have seen, poss due to rarity these days. For inatance my 03 52 plate 3.2 elite is listed on parkers site at £2600. I paid £3500 and px'ed 140k 99 cdx(valued at 400 :( ) a year ago and was happy to do so as i had been looking for a good 5 months.

Dealers such as Rodger Budden and DK car sales pushing the price up for everyone else doesnt help. They rarely let a face lift Elite go for less than 5k, although the current climate may have changed that somewhat.

Roger budden is not far from where I work and he has a 2.6 Elite Estate on for £4995.
I think the owner of the one I am looking at would deal if I go for it, may be as low as £3100.
But I have just put my 2.5 in for it's MOT so I will wait and see how much is wrong with it. I have change and fix most of the known problems on the 2.5 in the pasted 5 years and I am kind of attached to it.
