Hi,
Just joined the forum - its great.
I have a 2001 V6 with 103K and the two downpipes at the front have eaten through. The pipes seem to have metal shrouds around them and its the shroud thats eaten through.
No leaks though and the car just passed its MOT, so I was wondering whether I had a big bill coming up anytime soon!

Can you reattach them with jubilee clips?

Thanks for the suggestion. Had a look underneath but does not look like they can be taken off and reattached - the shroud seems to be part of the pipe.

Hi,
It's the heat shields that have corroded. not desperatley important.
They help to keep the catalytic convertors up to temperature as well as protecting the other parts of the car from the radiated heat.

Some people have been able to jubilee clip them back, not the easiest to get at though.

Omega cats are a fortune, but very reliable, so worth seeking 2nd hand one from one of the breakers on this site if you have not joy with fixing yours.

Hi,
Thanks to everyone who responded so far. Glad its not a serious problem. I'll aim to fix by bending s/s sheet to fit over the corroded heat shield and fasten in place with band clamps or jubilee clips. Genius
