Steering box adjuster
« on: 01 April 2009, 12:57:40 »

Can anyone tell me where the steering box adjuster is?. When I'm turning right fast ish, the steering pulls to the right  all of a sudden even tighter. Its like I've suddenly turned the steering wheel sharply. Might it be worn wishbones? or tie rods? Thanks for any help

The steering box adjuster is on top of the steering box itself. There is a screw and nut, the nut is a locking nut for it, but be careful when doing it as you don't want to turn it too far.

follow the metal transfer pipes, between engine and drivers wing, back towards the bulk head. The steering box is under the brake reservoir or there abouts, left of the pipes, iirc 15mill(?) nut with a torx grub screw in the middle.
Dont adjust with wheels straight ahead, feel for play on the road wheel while reaching through the window to move the stearing wheel at 90 degrees off centre, engine running. If there is no play at 90 odd degrees, then any tightening  while straight ahead will be over tight in all other positions as the box will wear most in the most common, straight ahead, position. In my limited experience with the box I found a tiny adjustment makes a fair bit of difference so go steady.

Last resort to be honest really, check wishbone bushes, stearing knuckle, bearings and track rod ends first imho.

Get somebody to wiggle the steering wheel whilst you hold the top half of the strutt spring cup under the wheel arch.

Feel for lumpy running of the top mount bearing

That is the classic symptom of torn wishbone bushes
