Cats
« on: 02 April 2009, 15:21:59 »

Hi
the 2.5 failed it's MOT on three things
1)Antiroll bar Drop link, not a problem I have to change these almost every year due to the speed bumps on the way to work.
2) Horn is to quite, may be a dirty connector or needs to be replaced.
3) Now the big one Emissions, I have being told the "Cat's" need replacing, as they have got old (They are said to last 100k miles and mine have done 200k)
The cheepest I have found for patten parts is about £90 each delivered.
But there are universal Cats avalible at about £35 each just cut the pipes and weld the unit in, has anyone tried using these on an Omega?

Hi I will post the results as soon as I can find the bit of paper.
But from memory it was the value that should be 0.3 and mine was 0.45.
I know the MOT guy and he made sure everything was up to temp as it started off at 0.59 and when down as the cats heated up.
The engine runs well and the consumption has not changed over the last 20K miles at around 28 miles per gallon.

My understanding is the Lamda is due to too much oxygen in the gases, main cause is air getting into the exhaust maybe a joint or hole.
The Lamda reading could be engine running lean but there are no other signs of this like plug colour.
The CO is due to the cats not turning it into CO2 hance the thinking change the cats.
but if you guys can suggest another cause please do, that why I belong to and love the OOF.
Thanks

They look for the oxygen content in the exhaust.....the same as the Lambda sensor does.

Right

1) Are there any fault codes stored?

2) is the air filter and breathers all nice and clear?

I did a paperclip test a couple of weeks ago and there were no codes displayed.
The air filter was change about a year ago  and the breathers where cleaned about 10k ago.
but the MAF takes care of the volume of the air into the engine and if the filter was blocked it would ajust the fuel to maintain the mixture?

Yes but, it would pull additional fumes from the engine inlcuidng oil which often buggers the emission tests.

Ok, so is the engine coolant temp getting upto say 90-95 deg?

Engine temp is correct 90 - 95 deg range.
So if I fit a new air filter and clean the beathers there maybe a chance the CO would drop into the pass band?

Not if they are already ok.....but I have to work ina  logical order and not assume anything  :y

The question will be, what is the ECU temp sensor thinking?

Any exhaust leaks?
