oil light
« on: 06 April 2009, 14:43:29 »

after doing the diff yesterday,i fitted the exhaust back on today, checked oil and water, then took the car for a run, couple of miles along the road the oil light started flickering, then it came on and stayed on,so limped home,by the time i got back there was a very noisy tappet, left the car for 10 mins, dipped the oil again still ok,started the car oil light went out straight away but still very noisy tappet, any ideas as why this happened?

Was the oil very low?

How well has the car been serviced?

Probably the flying valves (Don't know the correct expression in english sorry). are broken (actually bruised) and will need replacing. You'll be quite fortunate if its only this.
Also the oil pump could have broken when it stayed without oil.
The third part is the the badest thing that could happen ( the crankshaft (think that is the correct expression in english) got damaged
Don't know the correct expression in english sorry.

Keep an eye on it.

The followers will pump up again if oil pressure has been restored.

A few possibles

Knackered oil pump (normaly due to poor servicing as it wears them) - rarely recovers like you have seen.
Stuck open pressure relief valve.....this often clears and fresh oil keeps it working well.
Worn mains - clearly not in this case as it has recovered
Blocked sump strainer - often following the use of flushing agents.....can recover over time as the crudd falls back into the sump. Will happen again

As said, could be a stuck relief valve....an oil change would probably not go a miss and as mark said, drop the front sump section, clean it out and clean the strainer whilst you are there.

To be honest, that's probably not often enough. Though 6k is better than the stated 12k ;D

Yep... I was going every 3k but have upped it to 5-6k now I'm on LPG as the oil looks almost the same as it did when it went in :y :y :y

I think it probably helps that I rarely drive fewer than 15-20 miles if I start the car
