Ian_D - I have removed waterpump from block.  Its definately on the way out, just beginning to show the telltale signs of it coming apart.

Yours if you fancy an afternnon out to deepest brackley, or if you want to risk the postal service (may be a few days before I can get to PO though.

Cheers for having a look mate, Last night I bodged a water pump to the coolant system (from a washing machine belive it or not) and had it running for a good 30 mins. It didn’t pressurize up so im hoping im lucky!

I phoned a trade supplier and they was 40 quid for a new one, and can get it for me today! So i've ordered that.

Again, Thanks for the offer though!  :y And fingers crossed, lets hope she lives!  :-X

No probs, gave me the enthusism to strip that engine to bits so I can slowly dispose of it ;D

My old TD when it had its original head/gasket problem never really pressurised at idle, but as soon as you started driving it.

Oh right  :-/

I did give it a fair amount or revving up etc, but I guess this is still not the same as driving!

Daft question... If the HG has gone, how far would I need to drive it? We talking a mile or two, or a 50 mile round trip?

I'd say a couple of miles if it was like mine, and see what pressure had built up.  I didn't think mine was head gasket or head, as everyone I'd seem before was pretty spectacular...

Ive fitted a new water pump, and its looking fairly promising up to now.

I left it ticking over for 10 mins, and there was very little pressure (just squeezed the radiator hoses).

I then held the revs up at about 3000ish for a good few minuets (neighbours will love me, the viscous fan was running most of the time – then that fixed itself as it was running right from been cold ;D!), there was a little bit of pressure in the hose, but nothing more than I would expect due to engine now been midway on the temp gauge.

Revved it up a lot for a few mins, and then left it ticking over again for about 20 mins... All seemed fine.

Switched it off for about half an hour while I checked the rest of car over (found a few bigish problems  :-/ - but should be easy to fix!).

Started it up, and went round my housing estate about 6 times (only did about 2.5 miles as its tiny!), and gave it as much stick as I could (brakes + wishbones are in a very bad way, so had it locked in 1st most of the time for engine braking!). And its didn’t pressurize.

All in all, its now been running 1hr 55 mins (I reset the stopwatch on the MID when i fitted the new pump!  ;D) , and its not spat any water out, and I haven’t removed the cap either!  :)

Yes, old one shattered  :'(

Dead easy to change, hardest bit was removing the viscous fan!

Would say an hr max to change it.

Yep - about an hour to change it!
Don't forget to add 5 litres of Vx antifreeze - that's 50% strength.

I reckon a water pump is 15mins, assuming that stupid gay bmw fan comes off.  And stays off.

Sounds like its OK :y :y

She was running about 3 hrs, with no pressure buildup, so I drove to town (about 3 miles) and all seemed fine... So thought, balls to it, and continued to my grans, a further 3 miles!

Got there checked pipes and all seems fine. Then  drove about 6-7 miles back on the ring road at 60mph.

Car seems fine through city, but feels very weak on the ring road. Or is this just because im used to my V6? It just goes gutless above about 40mph? and to cruise at 60ish, I needs about 60-70% throttle which seems a lot to me?

MPG through the city centre to my grans (at night so not much traffic - still hit evey light on red though) it did 31.9mpg  :y (mid reading). Yet on the run back home on the ringroad, it only did 31.5mpg?  :-? Any ideas?

6 or 7 miles isn't really enough to get an accurate reading, and a difference of 0.4mpg is nothing to get excited about.  Even assuming it's accurate there's all sorts of things could cause it - you could just have been enjoying the drive back round the ring road with no traffic and so been driving a little more 'enthusiastically'.   ;)  It could even be case of your gran's house being at a lower level than yours, so it was downhill on the way there and uphill on the way back.  (A satnav should tell you the height above sea level of both houses if you want to test that theory out!)

Using the trip computer in my Granada I found that on visits to my Dad in Somerset (170 miles each way, mostly M5) I consistently got about 0.5mpg better in one direction than in the other.  I could never work out why!

Probably due to comparing it with the V6 ......

Get the tinker chipped next, and you'll immediately feel the difference, and improve the fuel economy too.
Mine now flies around the valleys at a proven 33 mpg, and I'm quite satisfied with it!

'PM' TheBoy or Omegatoy for the chip supplier.
