Yes, many times, its the tricky ones like un-explainable fuel consumption etc.

Thats where Tech2 realy comes into itself with real live data being recorded and displayed in graph form in TIS. Of course you need to know how to drive it properly.....which unfortunately most mechanics dont.

I did a gearbox upgrade and code read for a member yesterday, the climate shows a number of present codes and actuator tests returned some strange results...ask a few question....and you instantly suspect a connector loose on the back of the panel...

It is only simple basic fault finding skills which unfortunately these days are not taught...and an understanding of the basic principles which can then be applied to the systems.

I agree with MDTMs comments above, using the tool isn't about simply plugging in and seeing what it says (as what it says, if anything, may not be the real problem).  Its about understanding why it may be saying something.

Like MDTM, I'm not a fan of fuel issues type diagnostics.  Sometimes, even with Live Data, the ECU can mask the real problem by adjusting itself.  Lamdas (my pet hate), for eg, the ECU will adjust fuelling to make lamdas read in range.  OK, so then go back to the injection timing, to see that is 'normal' but you need some reference figures to compare against.

If he did, he would have known that using a saw on the intake would cut into the washer bottle ::)

Or putting the axle stands on the trailing arm pivots won't allow you to drop the subframe ::)

Or... ...no, I won't mention jacking up AA's car  :-X

Totally agree - we all make mistakes, anyone who says they don't are a liar!

My piss taking aside for a second, as we all make mistakes, it is your ability and confidence to fix those 'Oh Sh!t' type mistakes leave me in awe :y
