cam cover gasket tightening
« on: 10 April 2009, 14:52:30 »

I followed the various guides in faq, and some other advice in some threads here - I got the impression blue hylamar would be ok for the sealant. Was this a  bad choice? I've tightened to 8Nm as per guidelines, and run a short distance. So far so good.

My question is about the sealant and/or gasket settling in and do I need to recheck the tightness of the bolts, and at what sort of interval. It mentions something like this on the hylamar tube, and past gasket experience has made me a bit wary. I don't want to burn it out on a long drive if there's more to do.

Also, 8Nm is surprisingly light, but I'll stick to it against all instincts!

8Nm is right. Do not be tempted to do tighter. Its uneducated 'mechanics' who have started the myth about warped covers to cover up their poor workmanship by not reading the spec, and using a torque wrench

tiger: in the thread, cbh said "I used Hylomar Universal Blue on mine as I could not get the black stuff at the time and that was 40K miles ago, no leaks since"

boy: thanks for the reassurance on 8Nm.

I'll hope for the best and try for the Vauxhall black if I have to do it over again.
