Been busy...still loads of jobs to do.
« on: 18 November 2007, 22:12:10 »

O.k, following on from my original post about my gearbox/clutch problems, I have flushed the gearbox out and filled with the correct oil, bled the hydraulics and guess what? Yes....it's still exactly the same, heck of a job to get into first and reverse sometimes but if I put the car into first just before i stop, at a junction for instance, it slips in easily, stop the car and then try to select any gear it just won't go in mesh......not handy in town driving. Spoke to a gearbox/clutch specialist yesterday and he reckons Omega gearboxes and clutches are very robust and can do huge mileages and the problem is posssibly hydraulic.....maybe try master cylinder next??

That problem aside, yesterday I changed the rear shocks and both front wishbones, the bushes were absolutely shot, now the car is well out of alignment and drives like it's on ice, booking it for alignment tomorrow. Found another job to do while I was underneath the car, the exhaust has split on the front flexy.....grrrr...another chuffing job to do. The jobs to do list just keeps getting longer  >:( >:(

Sorry to hear about your problems Badger. The good thing is that, once all these things have been cleared up, you'll have a lovely car. I guess it's a lesson in looking after these things as you go? Chin up.

Thanks for the encouragement mate, I have only had the car for 3 weeks, seem to have inherited loads of problems probably due to poor maintainence by the previous owners. I'll get the car right eventually and then hopefully should have miles of trouble free motoring.

If my old 97 Omega was anything to go by there should be at least 100,000 more miles left in this one yet, it clocked up 189,000 miles (60,000 with me) and although it was rusty and scruffy and the engine was tired she kept going reliably with very little trouble.....I miss the old girl terribly :'(

Well, you'll get there. When I got mine, I had to do exhaust and front suspension and she had only done 36,000. I think she's up together now and she goes like a dream.  :y

Hydraulic ?, do you mean the clutch isn't disengaging properly?. Try checking for drag. If you can get it into gear, while stationary and with the brakes off, does it tend to move forward?. If so the clutch is draging. I don't know if this is possibly relevant, but if the syncromesh isn't working it will be very difficult to go into gear. I passed my test in an old landrover, in which you had to double declutch up and down the box. If you tried to go into gear with the engine running it wouldn't go. You had to release the clutch, rev the engine, then dip the clutch and try again.
Hope you get it fixed, the 2.2 facelifts are nice, comfy cars to drive !   :y
Ken

PS, what is the mileage like, remember the cam belt/idler changes every 40K miles. Miss these and...... :'( :'( :'(

If you put it into 4th while stationary, does it then let you slip straight into 1st?

Only just managed to get to the computer, can't access one at work.
Hi Pete, must admit I haven't tried going from 4th to first, car is at work at the moment in the pending tray waiting to be fixed or put in the bin! Some of the time the car will go in any gear just perfectly, didn't have a problem at all this morning driving to work....apart from the exhaust fell off!
Pretty sure the clutch is dragging Ken, but not all of the time. Double de-clutching seems to make no difference at all, the only way to get into gear (when it is playing up) is to turn off the engine or select first before I stop. I thought maybe the master cylinder was playing up, fluid leakage past the seals?
I've just done the cambelt Ken, car has done 70 odd thousand miles.
