Coolant Leak Update - Disaster Strikes
« on: 12 April 2009, 19:07:42 »

Well you could say Im not in a good mood at the moment. We have spent two days stripping down the mig looking for this bloody water leak. Unfortunatly after lots of blood, sweat and tears we have found the leak and Im ready to commit mig suicide.

The leak was as the Boy suggested the rear corner on the passeger side block (i.e. headgasket!!!!).

At first we thought it was a core plug and after 5 hours of trying to get the rounded bolt out of the coil pack bracket we found not to be. Before this we had already removed the plenum, injector rail, coil pack, downpipe, manifold, power steering pump, dipstick tube and all necesary pipework and electrical connections. This was all so much fun and at one stage we were positive that the leak was from the steel pipe in the centre of the rear of the engine under the heater bridge however that was due to the spray from the headgasket.

Have now removed timing and all necesary bits and head already off. Can now clearly see that the gasket is well and truly knackered and wouldnt have lasted much more. I think the most annoying factor is though that I only carried out an oil change on friday and have done 8 miles since doing it. I was planning on changing it at 1000 miles not 10 !!!!  :o :-/ >:(

Didnt take one but its in the car so not a problem will get one taken and post it. The head looks in really good condition, but Im guessing that the bloke that had it before me knew about it as the cam covers had been removed before and the first row of head bolts that u can easily get too were incredibly tight and the back row under the cam were set corectly so my guess is he had tightned them to slow the leak and then go trid to the garage where we bought it.  :(

Plus there were so many loose or broken fittings it was unreal. Got loads of parts to replace if I can get hold of them. The main one being the timing cover that is in three pieces and the countersink bolt for the coil pack mount that we had to cheisel off.

I'm sure the breakers on here can help with most odds and sods you need - apart from the parts that need to be new, of course :y
