Slight Misfiring...
« on: 25 March 2009, 17:42:45 »

Now that the problems have been sorted that caused the ECU light to come on I still have a slight misfire...

Its not regular, cant detect a pattern really atm...possibly just under heavy load and when under geared but here and there and quite infrequent, more annoying than anything...plugs/leads/dispack or should i look elsewhere??

Got the car from Markey Mark so all the gaskets had been sorted along with new belt/tensioners, water pump, oil cooler etc

Lost a little oil recently but found out today oil filler tube has a chunk missing so most likely leaks been from there  :y

Plug on the MAF looks a bit dodgy, jus tthe surrounding bit to stop you uncipping it by mistake I think thats broke away...but unplugging it puts the EML on and causes it to run worse...will stick a replacement on tomorrow and see what happens :y

Apparently, the sensor starts to mis-read causing progressively worse running.  Tends not to just suddenly stop working.  ;)

How does your misfire feel? Is it a slight hesitation when running?
As mine has that only on LPG now, used to have it on both petrol and LPG until i cleaned and blanked the EGR valve

TBH it basically runs fine when in correct gears for the acceleration and medium to slightly above medium acceleration, just when its wellied (or undergeared) that is hesitates at times...on very heavy acceleration at lower gears its more like misfiring

OK MAF changed and its certainly improved...runs very nice on the whole...

With cold engine there is no misfiring...unfortunately as engine warms up there is still some at 90 percent + acceleration...

Any thoughts??

Hi Chris,

You are describing a miss under load.

I would change the plugs and check their torque - and check condition of leads, and dis, in that order.

My money is on either a half eaten electrode, or a split on the boot of a lead...

i had somthing similar on my v6 mate, turned out one of the leads had been in oil and then given a bloody good clean so you could'nt tell when they was cold.
but one they was hot, the leads started to swell up and break down  :'(

new set of plugs and leads sorted it and it now pulls like a dream  :y

Ok had a look this morning...leads look to be pretty much new...spark plugs are genuine Vaux and I'm told by Markey Mark they were new when the engine was put in 5k ago...

However, the plugs were pretty dirty looking...could be soot build up from the misfiring its had due to some slight air leaks and the EGR system valve failure...or could have been they were fine but for some reason connection was a bit dodgy...

Removed the plugs, cleaned them all up...replaced the Drivers side bank as they looked worse and I had 3 spare new ones...put it all back together and...

Now runs perfect :y Full use of all 210 horses is available to my right foot without hesitation (tested in full to make sure  ::) )

Thanks for the confirmation that I was on the right track, much appreciated :)
