coolant leak
« on: 20 April 2009, 16:08:27 »

developed a leak - seen under the car dripping onto the offside/drivers cat - on the inside edge of it, some drips will land on it, others will miss?

HBV or other?

goes from full to 'check coolant' in 100 miles or less, quite a steady drip

Around that area I`d suspect HBV

Sounds like it to me. Get it sorted as the leak will only get worse and could take out other more expensive stuff in the process..

have a look at it - its just under the scuttle pretty much in line with the drivers position as he looks forward.  You can just see it (torch helps) if you stand by the drivers side wheel and peer under the scuttle.

had a little fiddle with the heating, on LO not much happens, switch it to HI and its drip city, back to LO and it stops.

pretty much confirms its the HBV.

Easy job?
£ on TC?

rawsondsr, did changing the HBV cure your water leak problem?
I have the same symptoms as you. went for a 40 mile drive and steam coming from under the bonnet and water dripping from the back of the engine / bell housing from underneath the car. When i looked under the bonnet at the back / top where there are 3 (what look like vacum pipes) joining the plenulm chamber, it was quite wet. Couldnt identify if the leak was coming from that area, or it was the steam that was making it wet! Some suggestions have been that the leak could be coming from the back of the engine where the oil cooler is situated. Was your test with the heater controls conclusive that it was the HBV?

..give him a chance - he only diagnosed it yesterday evening..

But yours sounds like HBV too. :y  they all go sooner or later.

The three (look like four) hoses that attach to the black plastic ecotec bit are the breather pipes.

OK, popped down to vx and paid my £35ish for a new HBV.

got home, printed off the guide, went outside and got cracking.  took the scuttle off, to give me room to get in, started the engine up and then water started gushing out the bottom of the HBV.  Got me pliers out an attacked the hoseclips, gave up after not much luck after 30 mins, popped down to my local friendly garage in fawkham, they lent me this great tool:

The wonders of having a proper old school friendly garage that trusts punters to borrow their tools!(borrowed battery packs and all sorts of other things as well as them showing me how to do things like change my UJs on the LR for free :D :y)

That made life sooo much easier, its ratchet operated, so once its on, its held on which means you have both hands to remove the pipes from the hbv, one hand in each side of the plenum, if you see what i mean.

all replaced, and leak seems to have been cured, i shall wait and see and hope!

regarding the heater test, the differences in drip rates pretty much confirmed it for me, just have a play around going to min max and off on and see what it does to the drip..

hell of a job though, simply cos of the lack of room, hosclip tool was invaluable though, i probably could have done it without, but with much more stress.

Oddly, on VXON, on their HBV guide, they say take the plenuma nd other bits and bobs off, it may make life slightly easier, but no need.

those tools seem to be the dog's b..

I used mini molegrips on mine which worked ok.

If you have big hands, whipping the plenum off at the same time certainly improves access - you can do a thorough breather/TB clean while you're at it:y
