How long does oil take to burn off?
« on: 30 April 2009, 21:36:25 »

I've got oil on the top of the nearside exhaust manifold. It's been burning off (with smoke) for weeks now and it never stops. It's a crusty sludgy mess of oily goodness. It's quite hard for me to get in there and scrape it off, so any idea of how long it might take to burn off completely?

I do 22 miles a day to and from work and other trips so about 130 miles a week is about right as a minimum.

However, I am not convinced it's old oil as I have found traces of new oil down there but I want to clean the old stuff off so I can easily see where the new (if any) is specifically coming from. But it's very hard to get access to that area.

I know I can use all sorts to clean off the drips from under the engine and gearbox but would the same work for this old sludgy mess of burnt oil? It's very difficult to get in there and scrape off or otherwise remove the old oil. I need something I can spray or pour on, leave a bit and the whole lot gets dissolved or just slides off easily.

I need to be sure of whether its old oil, or a mixture of old and fresh oil dripping from somewhere. And yes, I've changed the cc gaskets and its still doing it.

To do: Replace brake discs and pads; adjust already replaced shoes; check for leaks in oil cooler, cambelt area, crank seals, sump, dipstick; replace osf door; replace a tyre; clean, MOT.

Carb cleaner removes all sorts of nasty mess - £5 from Halfords.

I'd wait for some further advice first about what to look for and the impact of spraying this where you say you have the problem.

It eats latex and some plastics as it's so strong, but cleans up metal a treat. :y

Usually any oil spilt onto an exhaust manifold will burn away within a few mins. I would say you have a fresh supply being added from some where.

But if I spilt some while topping up and it settled there would that burn off in minutes or still be there nearly a month after?
