ok..hi guys, back from my friendly mechanic.. we did an oil and filter change (just in case) correct oil as per spec, ran her up and within minutes i got the same horrendous knocking again.. looks like im in deep with this one.. he pulled out his trusty stethoscope and we had a listen to the left and right banks, you could really hear the difference, the right bank sounded what i would call correct, but the left side , you could hear the knocking very loudly and it didnt sound good.

anyone know where the best place to get lifters etc from and any ideas of price.. thanks guys, will keep u informed of this little drama just in case this helps anyone else.

Yep, we did oil and filter change and ran her up again. Within five minutes I got the same awful rattle back. I've since been informed that this is a common problem. At best it's a case of clean the oil ways out and at worse it's a crack In the oilway and a very large bill....

Ow yes, that usual bull shite, if it was a common problem it would be a known fix!

Thats the usual sign of a muppet who knows not what about they speak!

Possibly an oil feed issue to that head, there are T vents in the head which control the oil feed to the head galleries for each cam.

Not convinced on it being a lifter as it sounds like it was ok when started.

When the cambelt was done did they do the idler and tensioner etc to?

Does it quieten down if revved or driven for some distance?

The only way to idendtify the source of the noise is to adopt a system of elimimating items , not to go guessing at what it might be or not be, get yourself a cheap stethiscope and run the engine to try to pinpoint the noise, it may be the cam has broken a lobe or two or the lifters are failing but thats just guessing

Daft as it may seem but why not lift the cam cover off and have a look to see if there is anything obvious lurking inside. surely the "mechanic" thought of this!

hi guys , thanks for your input, we did stethoscope the engine and its as u look at the engine, at the back left is where the rattling seems to be... the oil and filter was changed as per specs. i have run it for the last week with the new oil... im not losing power and except for the one instance last friday ive had no issues with her smoking on startup.. the next stage has to wait till i get paid, flushing oil (yes i know this can be iffy and bring hidden faults to the fore but start with the cheaper options before the stripdown) then run her on 5w 40 or 5w 30 for 200 miles. if that doesnt work then we're gonna start stripping her out and investigate further..the car still idles lovely and quiet and its still only at the point where the revs reach 3000 that the knocking noise starts, i got no loss in power and the fuel economy is still the same. and yes the mechanic did think of the obvious but he wants to cover the bases before he starts doing the more expensive stuff..will keep u informed next time we do something. have a good long weekend guys.
