ok so my monthly fuel bill has now hit the £300/mo mark.

i do getting on for 12,000 motorway miles a year just commuting, and have just found a girlfriend who lives 20 miles in the other direction.

3.0 MV6 is not the best option for me anymore

heres my idea...

get a smilar age 2.5td of any old trim level and transfer all the good bits from the MV6 into the tractor. the leather interior, the suspension, the ccrt700 stereo, the alloys the climate control etc etc.

I could then either break the rest of the MV6 or turn it into a track car...

looking on parker's guide tho te 2.5td only does 10 to the gallon more than the 3.0.. I currently get 26 to the gallon occasionally driving like a looney with the climate control on. If i drive moderately sensibly in a chipped tractor without the climate control on what sort of economy can I expect to get? SWMBO's octavia diesel does easily 50 to the gallon so i'd consider getting one of those if it wasnt a damned front wheel drive piece of %*&^....

Is your 26 mpg calculated or from the MID?
If it's then MID it's lying
My traktor gives 33mpg (calculated) on a run
The BMW lump is not an economical motor but will last for ever & tolerate all manner of abuse

Mine's chipped and returns a constant 33 mpg in the tough terrain here - proven!

Excellent driveability, cruises effortlessly on the motorway at 75-80 mph all day, and bags of grunt - literally!

Pish posh i do 20k a year in my mv6! they aint that bad on fuel imho

you can make them do 100mph at 55.6mpg if you play the MID up for instance!

myn will do 35 but its a manual and you really really have to concentrate on economical driving but its doable!

them bmw 2.5tds do loads more to the galon than 36!

The only accurate method to calculate consumption, is to brim the tank, use the car, and then refill it.
I'd ignore the electronic wizardry!

The BMW lump, as Pitchfork rightly says, is pretty well bombproof, but requires oil/filter changes every 4500 miles absolute maximum.
Suits us down to the ground though!

Taken over 4 tankfuls now, bear in mind i live in the mountains of spain and its a manual estate, chipped with couple other bits done! usually loaded to the gunnels!!! when coming home its all 2nd and third gear for the last 6miles, mine is averaging a lovely 46,7 to the gallon, its even better on a run, as it did santander to malaga onjust less than one tankful, a distance of 630 mles, at a steadyish 75/80 except through madrid where it was chocabloc!!

as do petrol autos, a lot of mass to get moving off the line - differe :ynt story when up and running and the transmision locks in

Or stick LPG on the MV6... I get around 20mpg on gas doing fast A's with lots of roundabouts and copious use of the loud pedal! Put it on a run at 75ish and it rises to mid-high 20's. Take into account that unleaded is fast approaching the £1/litre mark and LPG is around 55ppl at the more expensive places, under 50ppl at the cheaper places and you're talking about a saving of around 40%. A DIY kit, proven to work on the Omega, will set you back around £700 all in and you've got all the fun of a V6 with the economy of an oil burner!

Mine's an Auto so figures would be even better with a manual if jumping up and down on the pedals is what you prefer. And in addition you can extend your oil change interval after the first couple of changes as it comes out nearly as clean as it goes in!

Just my opinions, but I find mine costs me about 11p per mile to run on a "combined cycle" and I'm doing 25k per year and have previously sworn by diesels. Oh, and if you keep your current car you don't end up with something you may have to do all the normal jobs on to get it up to scratch.

Same here, mine rarely drops below 40 because I am always commuting along the A14. I have started gauging it on how many miles I get to a tank - currently around 550/600 on average.

Autos suffer very, very badly in town...Mines an auto and seems to absouloutly scoff fuel big time i cant believe it on the display it can be anything from 7 mpg uphill to 99.99 mpg downhill avarage at the moment is 20mpg ...is there anything i can check ...or could i be doing somthing wrong

I'd check the gearbox myself, then once you have noticed the lack of a clutch replace it with a nice manual box lol

Should I not believe the MID when it says 26 m/gal? I get about 360 miles on a tankful, takes 60-65 ltrs (assume 62.5), do some maths..... comes out at 26.16 mpg... seems right to me!

would people be expecting better or worse economy than that?

The trouble with an LPG conversion is the 25% load on the insurance. when I'm already paying 950 notes a year for comprehensive cover I don't particularly fancy a 25% loading!

Did they do a pre/mini-facelift 2.2dti???

ive got a manual gearbox ready to go then its gettin the "Chip'd "  & ill go from there ...but the diesel/auto economy has been disapointing so far
