2.2 DTI wont start after fuel filter change - Help
« on: 05 May 2009, 18:16:31 »

Hi Guys

I hope someone can give me a little advice.

I've had the local garage (good bunch of lads) change the fuel filter on my 2.2 DTI 03, today. Trouble is when I went to pick it up they hadn't been able to get it started. They had been trying allsorts to get her fired up. But they were running out of time. So I have had to leave it overnight.

Any idea's what they could be missing?

Any advice from any diesel guru's would be appreciated. :y

This motor is my livelyhood so I'm desperate to get it back on the road asap.

A few questions/pointers:
1) Is there sufficient fuel in the tank?
2) Did they fill the filter with fuel before refitting it?

If the answer to these is 'yes' then slacken the injector pipes at the injectors. Keep well clear, and turn the engine over on the key until fuel is seen squirting from the injector pipes.
Retighten the pipes, start it as normal, and you should be back in business.

Then wash-down the spilled fuel with warm soapy water.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did asked if they had primed the filter - they said yes.

The fuel was low when I took it in, the orange light had just come on, but it was showing about 60 miles left on the Display and it has always been pretty accurate in the past.

They said they had put another gallon in for good measure.

They said they are only getting small squirts through the injector pipes.

Oooer ..... !!!

I'd remove the fuel filter (again), and re-check that it's actually the correct filter. Then check that it's seated correctly to the housing with the sealing ring intact. Ensure that the filter's full of fuel (again), then have another go at bleeding the injectors.

I don't allow my tank to get that low on fuel, so are we sure that they've actually added fuel to the tank?
Let us know how you progress.

Thanks for your advice guys. :y

I'll check with them tomoz and double check they have done as you suggest.

There isnt anything with the management system that can cut the fuel supply off is there?

Where abouts on the fuel pump do you attach the vac pump?

Hi Guys

Well after your great advice, I didn't have a sleepless night and thank goodness my motor is now running fine. :)

I didnt manage to get your advice to the garage in time, there phone was engaged constantly this morning. :(

But luckily by the time I did get through the Boss had got his hands on my car (he wasn't in yesterday) and found the damaged/faulty filter seal in no time, that was obviously allowing air into the fuel system, instead of creating suction from the tank.

Just as you lads suggested. :y

If I hadn't had your advice I would have been worried about finding the money for a new fuel pump. That was voiced by one of there mechanics before I left last night.

Thanks Again to you guys and the Boss ;)
